The Crete region

Koutouloufari is a small village located at the root of Mount Harakas, 26km east of the city of Heraklion. Having maintained a traditional and peaceful character throughout the years of rapid touristic development in the surrounding region and at a close distance from sites of archaeological, historical, cultural and athletic interest, Koutouloufari is the ideal destination for those who seek an alternative vacation plan.

Limani Hersonissou (the Greek words for Port of Hersonissos) is a seaside town 25km east from the city of Heraklion. Limani Hersonissou served as an important seaport and commercial center from the Ancient on to the Roman and Byzantine Times. The contemporary town stands over the ruins of ancient Hersonissos and is a cosmopolitan touristic destination, famous for the sandy beaches and vivid night life.

Heraklion/Iraklion

The region of Lagada (the Greek word for “valley”), a place of outstanding natural beauty, is located southwest of Koutouloufari and consists of the villages Potamies, Avdou, Gonies and Kera. The traditional architecture of the villages that are surrounded by olive groves, plane trees, orchards, water streams, small plateaus, caves and gorges award visitors with moments of peace and tranquility. The cultural heritage of the region includes remains of Roman water-bridges that provided water to Hersonissos, as well the monasteries of Gouverniotissa in Potamies and Kardiotissa in Kera, that continue to attract historical interest and many worshippers throughout the year. Extremely rich in fauna and flora, large areas of the region have been integrated in the NATURA 2000 ecological network.

Heraklion is the largest city and capital of the island of Crete. For centuries the city was known as Candia, an adaptation of the Greek name “??????” (pronounced Chándax, the Greek word for “moat”), which was used to describe a big moat constructed around the city by the Arab occupators in the 9th century AD. Nowadays, Heraklion is considered one of the most important commercial and touristic centers of Greece.
