Henley-on-Thames / Dunsden Green area
The Oxfordshire side of the River Thames is famous for its rural nature and for the 'Chilterns Area of Outstanding Beauty'. The Chilterns is a beautiful place of rolling hills, extensive woodlands and of course the gorgeous winding River Thames. In the area you can see the famous bluebells burst into flower in April/May or take the 'Wind in the Willows' stroll along the Thames Path.
Once-extinct Red Kites have been re-introduced and circle in the skies, and it is not unusual to see huge herds of deer roaming about in the beechwoods!
The famous university town of Oxford is only 30 minutes away, Heathrow Airport is 40 minutes and central London is approx. one hour drive.
The famous Henley Regatta and Henley Festival takes place in June, while you are certain to eat well as no celebrity chef worth their salt goes without a gastro pub in the Henley area these days! There are, to name a few: Marco Pierre White's The Highwayman Inn, Michael Parkinson's The Royal Oak, Anthony Worral Thompson's The Greyhound and Douglas Green's famous The Little Angel.
The town sits on the Oxfordshire side of the river and is very scenic. Nearby you can visit the famous village of Hambledon (where many TV shows have been set including Chitty Chittty Bang Bang and the Vicar of Dibley).
Walking and cycling is the way to go around Henley: there are miles of unbroken beech woods in the Hambledon Valley and Fawley, there is the dramatic Ridgeway for the fit and strong and all about are picture postcard villages including Turville, Skirmett, Frieth and Christmas Common (not for no reason do so many famous people live in this area!!) If you plan your route well you can walk and cycle for miles and see barely a single car!
PS You can walk from the cottage down to the Thames path on the river Lastly, the area's most famous brewery is walking distance from the cottage.
