Home description
Rock Cottage is over 500 years old, a traditional Cornish property and stands alone in over two thirds of an acre of its own secluded and terraced garden leading to the shore of the unspoilt Mawgan Creek on the Helford River. The view is superb with no other properties, neighbours or owners in sight to spoil your privacy. It is a wonderful setting for a leisurely time, peaceful and tranquil with abundant wildlife. A rowing dinghy is included for fishing and exploring the creeks. The wooded and protected Helford River valley is a haven for numerous types of water birds including Egrets, Herons, Mute Swans and Kingfishers are frequently seen darting across the water at Rock Cottage.
Personally managed, this romantic cottage has three bedrooms, full central heating by radiators in all rooms, offers excellent facilities for up to six persons, and has a view of the river from every room. With its ideal location and fantastic scenery, this property is very popular and attracts artists, authors, photographers and the occasional film star!
The peace and quiet on the water is very relaxing and the creek always has something to catch the eye whether its the flashing turquoise of the kingfishers, or small boats and canoes. The scenery is ever-changing and as the tide ebbs it paints another colourful picture.
The village of Mawgan is a 10 minute stroll away and has a 12C Church, The Ship Inn and a well-stocked Spar Shop. Towards St Martin is Gear Farm organic shop which sells delicious pizzas from the wood-fired oven, pasties, fresh fish, vegetables and more. The Trelowarren Estate is closeby and hosts the New Yard Restaurant. When it comes to beaches, we are spoilt for choice and Kynance Cove is a hit everytime!
There are some good walks from the doorstep of Rock Cottage, which is very popular with all age groups, and just perfect for celebrating an anniversary, birthday, family holiday or taking that well deserved rest from a busy lifestyle. Out of season Short Breaks are available from November until Easter.
Over the years, we have built a fine reputation and many of our guests return frequently as they find it difficult to tear themselves away from the peace and beauty of this magical place, and always find lots more to do and enjoy.
We hope you will choose Rock Cottage, and then you will discover the secrets of this delightful area for yourself!

The West Country / Cornwall region
The Lizard Peninsula boasts a wealth of fabulous sandy and safe beaches for bathing and body boarding. The climate is very mild even in the winter months. It is the most southerly point in mainland England, has rare wildflowers, unique geology and is home to England's rarest breeding birds - the Cornish Chough. It has a remarkably beautiful coastline with many quaint old fishing harbours and tiny sheltered coves.
The warm local climate encourages the growth of sub-tropical vegetation, and a constant profusion of colour all year round. Primroses flower before Christmas, and camellias open in December whilst daffodils often decorate the hedgerows in January. This is followed by a display of bluebells and wild flowers.
This part of Cornwall is an absolute delight for those who enjoy the outdoors. Quite often seals, dolphins and basking sharks are regularly seen in the waters around the Lizard, and at Falmouth sightseeing boat trips are available.
Helston / Helford River area
Rock Cottage is situated at the head of the Mawgan Creek of the Helford River which runs from Gweek down to Mawnan Shear where it widens out into Falmouth Bay. The river, which is really a tidal creek with oak wooded hills and pasturelands, is one of the most beautiful and unspoilt stretches of water in the country. The narrow lane to the cottage takes you over an ancient stone bridge where swans and ducks feed and the kingfishers dart across the creek.
Here are just a few of the places close to Rock Cottage. All are very easily accessible and within 20 minutes drive.
Church Cove, Gunwalloe - Famous small church on the beach. Sandy beach, good bathing, grassy areas behind beach excellent for picnics.
Poldhu Cove - Sandy bay sheltered by high cliffs. Good surfing when wind and tide are right, rocky pools, magnificent cliff walks (National Trust), wild flowers.
Kynance Cove - Very famous beauty spot. Spectacular cliff descent on foot from car park at top (National Trust). Variety of coves, serpentine rocks rising high out of the sea. Excellent cafe. White-sand, turquoise water and multi-coloured islands.
The Lizard Lighthouse - Most southerly point. Magnificent view of rock-strewn sea from lighthouse or cliffs.
Cadgwith - Beautiful little fishing cove, shingle beach with some sand below high cliffs. Rocky prominence above deep pools; excellent for diving and swimming. Many flat shelves on rocks popular for picnics and sunbathing.
There is a continuous cliffside walk right round the Lizard Peninsula, affording magnificent views of some of Cornwall's most spectacular and rugged scenery, much of it is owned by the National Trust.
Visitors can play golf either at Mullion, which has a wonderful view of the sea, or Helston (short course). Horse riding is available at either Mullion or Constantine.
Many artists and craftsmen work in this area. There is a small exhibition centre/gallery at Trelowarren, and Mullion. The Tate and the Barbara Hepworth Museum in St Ives, are worthy of a visit too as well as the Penlee Gallery in Penzance.
There are a number of fine restaurants within the locality, the nearest is New Yard Bistro at Trelowarren in Mawgan, Halzephron at Gunwalloe, South Cafe at Manaccan and the newly opened Nansloe Manor Restaurant serving fine Italian cuisine on the outskirts of Helston. The nearest pub, The Ship Inn, is 10 minutes walk from Rock Cottage, this serves good pub food has local ales, and is welcoming. There are many pubs on the Lizard to choose from.
This part of Cornwall has a diverse range of both National and privately owned Gardens: Trevarno in Helston, Bonython, Trebah, Glendurgan, Trewithen, Lost Gardens of Heligan, Eden Project and many more.
Other attractions closeby include Flambards in Helston, The National Seal Sanctuary at Gweek, Poldark Mine, Roskillys Farm, Future World at Goonhilly. For the water sports enthusiast, boat hire, windsurfing, sailing and diving facilities are all available on the Lizard.
The ancient market town of Helston is famous for its Flora Day which is held in early May when about one thousand dancers take to the streets and all the shops are decorated with bluebells and gorse. It was once a port before it was cut off from the sea by Loe Bar in the 13th century. According to some sources, Helston, with a population then of about 200, was a small port which exported tin and copper.
The Town has a mixture of Georgian and Victorian architecture and there are a fine array of public houses, one of which dates back to the 15th century and still brews its own ale. Helston offers all the necessary shops as well as a very interesting Museum to visit on a rainy day and only a 10 minute drive from Rock Cottage.

Recliner chairs and a parasol are provided as well as a family size barbecue, large picnic table and an oak bench seated further down the garden. Many of our guests enjoy sitting here with a glass of wine watching the boats on the water, or listening to the curlews and other water waders as the tide gently laps the shore.
Down the stone steps to the rocky and muddy foreshore you will find 'Peggy' an 11ft rowing dinghy, useful for exploring the meandering creeks. One may also catch sight of Egrets, Herons, Kingfishers, Shellducks, and Curlews as well as many other water birds. Younger members of the family love to dangle lines for river crabs from the jetty, play in the garden or just explore the woods nearby. Should you wish to bring a small boat, we will provide a suitable mud mooring, chart of the River, launching arrangements, and tide table at no extra cost. The creek however is an ideal environment for kayaking and some of our guests bring these with them.
At dusk and especially on a still evening, the many fish jumping create circles over the surface of the water. Fishing for Grey Mullet, Sea Bass, Sea Bream and many other types is very popular and quite a few suppers have been landed! For guests who also like to freshwater lake fish, we can provide you with details of a nearby facility.
From the moment our Guests arrive at Rock Cottage they start their holiday, and will find the Cottage warm and welcoming, personally prepared with the beds made, all household linen and necessities in place, some samples of local Cornish produce, many welcoming touches and everything in excellent order throughout. Guestbook for Rock Cottage - Helford River
BEST CHRISTMAS YET! - Bill & Gail (Birmingham) After years of doing Christmas at home with all its delights; overcooked sprouts, undercooked turkey, family punch ups, lop sided trees, and anadin extra! - we decided to try something a bit different and we booked Rock Cottage for a week over the holiday period. My husband and I were joined by our daughter (21), our son and his girlfriend both are in their mid twenties. We did our last minute shopping on Christmas Eve in Taunton M&S. We spent an evening or two getting tipsy at the local pub (The ship.. I think) and giggling down the lanes on the way back. We ate Christmas lunch at the pub too; it was a real treat and not a soggy brussel sprout in sight! We wrapped up and went for long walks on various beaches including Church Cove which was a so invigorating. We lingered over breakfast each day just enchanted by the view from the window. When the kids got withdrawal symptoms and left us to head back to party in the big cities ( London and Birmingham), a couple of friends joined us and we did the same things all over again. The cottage is so lovely, and immaculate. Linda is brilliant and caring she took so much trouble to make sure we were comfortable. If there is a vacancy book it! You wont regret it!
FIVE STAR HOLIDAY - Jane & Michael (Dorset) We were looking for a peaceful holiday in a comfortable high quality cottage which afforded pleasant views, enclosed gardens and a high degree of seclusion in a locality which offered excellent walking, good dining and interesting places to visit.
Rock Cottage delivered on our requirements in spades.
The owners do a fantastic and professional job in the upkeep and the promotion of Rock Cottage. The cottage is well equipped and in excellent order. Although the garden is a little steep the views from the property are stunning. A lane runs by the side of the cottage but this is not too busy. The cottage is positioned in a beautiful and tranquil setting and stands in splendid isolation, with no near neighbours; something we fully appreciated.
We enjoyed walking out from the cottage with the shop at Gear Farm and the pub and general store in Mawgan being close at hand. Within a drive of ten to twenty minutes there are at least six good quality eating places and the area is an ideal location for visiting the south west of Cornwall.
With the weather on our side, a fantastic location and the excellent accommodation at Rock Cottage we had a truly five star holiday experience.
PERFECT RELAXATION - Liz & David (Stratford upon Avon) We first saw Rock Cottage many years ago when exploring the roads & creeks around Helford River so when we first saw the advertisement in a national paper we booked immediately. That was in 1993 and we have been visiting ever since.
The combination of peace, the wonderful birdlife and that stunning view, which never fails to take our breath away on opening the gate, guarantees a relaxing stay whatever the weather. On arrival, we just have to sit in the garden for an hour or so soaking up the view before we do anything else.
The cottage is kept beautifully clean and it is always nice to feel the continuity of it being owned by the same family for over 50 years
There are so many local attractions that we rarely go far from the Lizard peninsula during our stay. Despite many years of visiting Meneage, we are still finding new places to go but the favourites are the gardens. Just over the river, Trebah in particular and Glendurgan are always wonderful even in summer rain! The coves such as Cadgwith, Kynance and Church Cove are all delightful as is the broader bay at Coverack.
Peggy the rowing boat is the icing on the cake for exploring the creeks without disturbing the peace & quiet. It is also effective at burning off the energy taken on board from the irresistible local cream teas !!
We have never found a more exquisite location in all our travels here & abroad so Rock Cottage is the yardstick by which others are measured.
Idyllic Creekside Cottage - Sally G (Lancashire) "The view of the creek when you first encounter Rock Cottage is simply breathtaking and the grounds and house a delight to explore. We have visited Rock Cottage twice in different seasons and it was equally lovely on both occasions. There is an abundance of wildlife in the surrounding woodlands and upon the creek itself and you never tire of the stillness and tranquility. All the home comforts are provided for with welcoming touches such as a cake & fresh flowers upon arrival - the cottage is equipped with everything you could possibly need and Linda & Robin are perfect hosts. The addition of 'Peggy' is a wonderful addition and once you venture out on the creek, it assumes an even more magical quality. A wonderful cottage in a truly lovely location which visitors return to again and again".
Heaven whatever the weather - Colin & Jill (London) "Have stayed at Rock Cottage three times over the past 10 years and all the family simply love it whatever the weather.
Location perfect being in the middle of nowhere but with major facilities (big supermarket, doctor etc) only 10 minutes away.
Everyone enjoys messing about in the boat, crab fishing with lumps of cheap bacon (75 in two hours our record so far) and visiting our favourite spots such as Roskillys and Glendurgan.
What do we love about Rock Cottage?
The peace, the trees, the river, the wildlife, the recliners, the barbecue, the location, the peace, the history, the beaches, the crab fishing, the peace, oh and just about everything - even when it rains.
Stay there and you'll be queuing up to go back".
