mile from Manaccan and just 100 yards from the head of Gillan Creek, in a magical setting, a stone cottage converted from an 18th cent. threshing barn with some low lintels, knobbly walls and beams. It faces over its extensive award-winning gardens (picnic table, barbecue) and woodland (15 acres in all), through which a sparkling little stream runs, with kingcups, cherry blossom, magnolia and a host of other plants, making this a very special place. All is for you to explore and enjoy (bird-watchers delight), but small children should be supervised. Attached to one side of the cottage, a disused old stable and cart shed and there is plenty of car/boat parking space. A mile of creekside lane leads to the beach at St Anthony-in-Meneage and boat hire.Garden door (59 lintel) into open-plan living/dining room with large comfy sofas, inglenook (woodburner), piano, heavily beamed ceiling and TV/DVD/video; kitchen (slimline dishwasher, microwave, oil-fired Rayburn plus electric cooker, larder fridge) with slate worktops and butler sink; big walk-in pantry (washing machine, tumble drier, freezer), through to smart shower-room (suite). From the living room, stairs up to three pretty bedrooms with wood floors (rugs) a double (5 bed) with en suite bathroom (suite plus bath-shower) and door to garden via stone steps, another double in what was the threshing room, with gorgeous garden view, and a twin with the same lovely view; bathroom (suite plus bath-shower). While the world rushes and roars past, this is a little bit of secret heaven.

The West Country region

The Lizard peninsula: quite different to Penwith (see End of England): not wild; very varied. Down its west side are sandy coves (Kynance, with towers of serpentine rock, is stunning). In the middle, Goonhilly Downs are flat, little cultivated, with their very own wild flower species and a satellite tracking station. Lizard Point (lighthouse) is the English mainlands southernmost. The south and east coasts are also of coves between cliffs and one bigger, child-friendly beach, Kennack Sands, and the pretty thatch-roofed villages (not many in Cornwall) of Cadgwith and Coverack, and handsome St Keverne (the farm making Roskilly ice cream is nearby and visitable), and off-shore The Manacles, which sank many sailing ships.

Then, approaching the Helford Rivers mouth, you come to Gillan Harbour and St Anthony-in-Meneage and all that is soft and dreamy, lush, sub-tropical and wonderful about south-west Cornwall; and so it continues up the wide river to Helford village, Frenchmans Creek and, up another creek, Port Navas (see Cornwalls Med). Helston is the base town; Mullion has a golf course with great views; Porthleven is the fishing village (quite big); Gweek has a seal sanctuary; from Culdrose airbase, sailors of all kinds (and occasionally tourists) are rescued.

Helston

Manaccan: pretty village (church, PO/shop), mile from the creeks of the Helford Passage. Here, in the 17th cent., a form of titanium was discovered and subsequently named manachanite. Helston, 9 miles.
