Key Info
  • Beach / lakeside relaxation
  • Great for children of all ages

  • Pets welcome

' 1' miles north of Helston, in, the tiny hamlet of Coverack Bridges (golf club with restaurant/bar), a good, sturdy, 'upside down' cottage cleverly converted from an 1840s granite-built barn. Behind, small sitting-out area, part-covered (table/chairs) and, across the lane, steps down to own large lawned garden (table/chairs, barbecue), beautifully green and restful with big tropical Gunnera and, forming one boundary, the river Cober tumbling past on its way down to the sea at Porthleven (fishing harbour, boat trips, galleries). The tree-lined river bank is unfenced, so supervised children can paddle with care - listen carefully and you may hear the splash of leaping trout.  From lane, front door to hall and three smart bedrooms with travertine-tiled floors (rugs) - a double, a twin (zip-linkable to 6' double), and a single (hooks for clothes-hanging). Bathroom (suite plus bath-shower and hand-shower); loo (washbasin). Outside store for your wetsuits/beach gear etc. Upstairs (stairgates), spacious open-plan living/dining/kitchen (dishwasher, small microwave, larder fridge, gas oven with induction hob) with granite worktops, high apex beams, wood floor (rug), corner sofa, woodburner, TV/DVD/PVR, iPod dock; stable doors to sitting-out area and stone store (washer-drier, freezer). Shop and pub, 1 mile by road. A relaxing place, smartly done; lovely beaches and walks in the area.

The Cornwall region

The Lizard peninsula: quite different to Penwith (see End of England): not wild; very varied. Down its west side are sandy coves (Kynance, with towers of serpentine rock, is stunning). In the middle, Goonhilly Downs are flat, little cultivated, with their very own wild flower species and a satellite tracking station. Lizard Point (lighthouse) is the English mainland's southernmost. The south and east coasts are also of coves between cliffs and one bigger, child-friendly beach, Kennack Sands, and the pretty thatch-roofed villages (not many in Cornwall) of Cadgwith and Coverack, and handsome St Keverne (the farm making Roskilly ice cream is nearby and visitable), and off-shore The Manacles, which sank many sailing ships.

Then, approaching the Helford River's mouth, you come to Gillan Harbour and St Anthony-in-Meneage and all that is soft and dreamy, lush, sub-tropical and wonderful about south-west Cornwall; and so it continues up the wide river to Helford village, Frenchman's Creek and, up another creek, Port Navas (see Cornwall's 'Med'). Helston is the base town; Mullion has a golf course with great views; Porthleven is the fishing village (quite big); Gweek has a seal sanctuary; from Culdrose airbase, sailors of all kinds (and occasionally tourists) are rescued.

Helston

Helston: small old town, the Lizard's biggest, with shops, indoor swimming pool, boating lake and popular family theme park. Nat. Trust Loe Pool (beautiful lagoon, lovely walks), 1 mile. Gweek (seal sanctuary), 1½ miles. Porthleven (shops, pubs, cafés), Church Cove, Gunwalloe (sandy beach, pub) and the Helford River, about 4 miles; Praa Sands, 5. St Ives, 10.

"A real gem"

We have just come back from an amazing week staying at the Withy Barn. The owners were so welcoming. We hadn't been to the Lizard Peninsular before but have fallen in love with this area. The Bar… More

Thank you very much for your kind feedback. I'm glad to hear that you so enjoyed your stay and we look forward to welcoming you back in future.
