The Northern England / Yorkshire/Yorkshire Dales region
The North York Moors National Park covers 554 square miles, with landscape ranging from heather-clad moorland and deep secluded dales, to the cliffs and coves of the magnificent coastline. A haven for walkers, the area also boasts great cycling, gliding, riding and fishing, whilst North York Moors Railway is the perfect way to enjoy the beautiful scenery in a more relaxed setting. Visit the market towns of Pickering or Thirsk; the latter famous for its links with the English country vet and author, James Herriot.
Nearby, some of Yorkshire’s best-loved villages including Thornton-le-Dale and Rosedale Abbey offer a taste of village life, as does Goathland, ‘Aidensfield’ in the TV series ‘Heartbeat’. Finally, stop off at Castle Howard and Duncombe Park, two of Britain’s most historic stately homes situated in breathtaking parklands and gardens. The cliffs, sandy beaches and smugglers’ caves of the Yorkshire coastline are a haven for beachcombers and coastal walkers. Discover the quaint fishing villages of Robin Hood’s Bay and Staithes, with their brightly coloured fishing boats. Finally, there’s the historic city of York, with its interactive Viking Centre, Roman walls, medieval streets, vibrant shops and Gothic York Minster cathedral.
The Helmsley area
On the southern edge of the North York Moors National Park is the prestigious market town of Helmsley. Lying in a sheltered corner of Upper Ryedale, this lovely settlement boasts a spacious market square surrounded by houses, hotels and shops as well as a 12th Century castle. English Heritage's Rievaulx Abbey is close by too and there is a multitude of excellent walks in the near vicinity, the most well known of these - the Cleveland Way – starting in the village itself. The region’s capital of York is less than an hour’s drive to the south, whilst Scarborough and the east coast just over an hour. The famous steam railway line at Pickering is just a thirty minute drive away.

,Everything, plenty of room for all 10 of us. Lovely and warm and very homely.
Plenty of books, DVD's and music etc. There was no need to take anything other than our clothes, fantastic.

,The cottage was in a good location from the town centre and well within walking distance for all the facilities of Helmsley. It was particularly warm and cosy for the time of the year and the underfloor heating was a lovely feature whilst sitting around the huge table chatting to the family.
Mrs Johnson, Hartlepool, Durham

,Castle View was conveniently situated in Helmsley and within walking distance of the shops, banks etc. yet it was very quiet in the surrounding area of the cottage.
