The Paphos District

There's something truly special about the island of Cyprus that few can define. Yet it has a magnetic lure of mythic aptitude that has been beckoning visitors here for centuries!

Cyprus lies in the Eastern Mediterranean and is a land of stunning natural beauty and rich heritage. The island enjoys glorious summery weather all year round, giving rise to its relaxed outdoor lifestyle.

Far reaching sandy beaches and pebble bays bordering clear turquoise waters fringe the island's breathtaking coastline. The magnificent Troodos Mountains' emerald green slopes are flecked with colorful wild flowers in spring and are iced with snowy caps in the few cooler months of the year.

Cyprus is a thriving holiday destination, with modern coastal resorts that provide endless entertainment for holidaymakers and residents alike. In recent years, many have decided to turn their ultimate holiday experience into a way of life by relocating to Cyprus.

The transition is a smooth one as English is widely spoken, Cypriots drive on the left and even the legal system is based on the British one. An added benefit is that Cyprus is a full EU member, making it simple to live and work here.

At first glance, present-day life in Cyprus seems a far cry from the straightforward conventions of yesteryear, with its international shops and facilities, however, many traditions still prevail. Nestled high in vine-clad hillsides are quaint villages, seemingly fixed in ways from years gone by. Age-old crafts including weaving, embroidery, lace making and silversmith are still widely practiced.

Traces of the island's long and intriguing history are still prominent, from ancient castles and amphitheatres to tombs and monasteries. Discoveries about Cyprus' past are constantly being made as new finds are revealed. Recently there has been speculation that Cyprus could be right beside the lost city of Atlantis!

In essence, the attraction to Cyprus is surely the same as it has always been. There are so many different aspects to the island that there really is something for everyone to enjoy! From its temperate climate and dramatic landscape, to its sun-drenched cuisine, friendly people and beguiling antiquity. Often described as 'an island of contrasts', Cyprus is just that, and that's just what makes it so irresistible to so many! Well, perhaps that and a little of the island's own mysterious alchemy!

Helios Heights

Aphrodite Hills Golf and Leisure Resort has everything for a self-contained holiday resort, Including an 18 hole golf course, 3 hole golf academy, driving range, tennis academy, additional hard all purpose courts, horse riding and cycling. Nature Trails in the ravine for walkers. The Retreat, Spa and Thermai offers beauty and body treatments, a swimming pool, juice bar, gym, sauna and yoga & fitness classes.

The Village Square has shops, sports/music bar with quiz and theme nights, Premiership & European Live football, traditional Cypriot taverna with Cyprus Nights with live Greek music and dancing, a Pizzeria/Pasta restaurant offering table service, some Italian buffet nights, also takeaway pizza service, Asian Corner with Chinese & Japanese cuisine, and a fine dining French Brasserie. There is also a coffee shop, well stocked supermarket and bakery along with a travel agency, bank, kids club with playground and arts & crafts centre, open air cinema and a Chapel.

St. Catherine’s chapel and amphitheatre provide a beautiful and romantic setting for weddings.

Younger visitors can find entertainment with a children’s playground, kids club and mini golf. Babysitting facilities are available so parents can enjoy the great restaurants on site in the evening or a pamper treatment in the amazing Retreat Spa.

With golf, tennis courts, horse riding, a multi-purpose court and the 5* Intercontinental Hotel, the resort can truly offer something for everybody.

Aphrodite Hills also has various nature trails starting at the resort. The famous Aphrodite’s Rock, Aphrodite’s birthplace according to legend, is only 5 minutes away.

A game of volleyball, basketball or mini football can be enjoyed in the specially designated outdoor area.

In nearby Paphos you can find numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites, a joy for people with an interest in history and archaeology.

Guests are also able to use the faclities of A/Hills 5 star Interconental Hotel with its four restaurants and swimming pools. There is a beach just at the resort entrance, with picnic areas and nature trail along the coast to Aphrodite's Rock, and an exclusive beach club with loungers, parasols, bar and restaurant at Avidmou, 15 mins away.

Aphrodite Hills beach, with sun bed and umbrella rental, is just 1km away and The Intercontinental Beach Club is a 15 minute drive from the resort. An hourly shuttle bus runs from the adjacent Intercontinental Hotel to the beach at Avdimou (bar and restaurant facilities). Other beaches at Pissouri and Geroskipou are within 10-15 minutes drive. The legendary Aphrodite’s Rock is a 5 min drive from the resort.

Overlooking the signature hole of the golf course and approximately 15 minutes walk across the ravine to the club house, shops and restaurants. Aphrodite Hills golf course is outstanding. Designed by Cabell Robinson (responsible for Valderama among others) with numerous different tees it provides a fair test for pros and club golfers alike. In the next valley is the Secret Valley golf course which though less prestigious is a good scenic course with a lovely club house.

Two minutes walk brings you to an excellent tennis complex consisting of a new clubhouse five hard courts and four red shale courts. These can be booked for a very reasonable fee and are all floodlit. A range of fully qualified coaches are also available.

The Spa has won many awards for the quality of the treatments offered not to mention its signature outdoor infinity pool providing stunning views of the Mediterranean. There is a large staff to provide hydrotherapy massage and the full range of treatments. Alongside the SPA is a fully equipped GYM with an extensive range of exercise equipment, weights and if required personal training.

It is possible to ski or toboggan on Mount Olympus from January to March. There are four runs of about 200m in Sun Valley and five longer more demanding runs on the North face. Cross country skiing is also possible and equipment can be hired in Sun Valley. Mount Olympus is 3km from the Troodos hill resort and an hour's drive from Limassol.

"Recommended for a chill-out"

Great apartment in an excellent location with access to the pool from the bottom of the garden. Tennis, golf and all village facilities within easy walking distance. We travelled as a family with a 15 and 12 year old finding the lack of Wi-fi an issue, but regular visits to Costa at the village square where free access is available provided the daily fix (also available at the golf club if you don't want to pay for access). Golf course at Aphrodite is good, but we wanted to golf as a 3 ball and you need to be 18 to drive a buggy and they wouldn't allow 3 in a buggy due to some of the driving conditions. We also played at the Elea course which is a 15-20 minute drive and was very good. Some of the restaurants at the village require you to book (if you don't want a long wait for a table), so planning ahead can be beneficial for some of them. We had some time to fill between leaving the appartment and our flight, so went to the cinema / 10-pin bowling as you enter Paphos on the A6 (at the roundabout) which we thought was very good and the American diner was good value. For us, a car was a must and we ventured as far as Limassol to the East and Coral Bay to the West and there are a variety of shops and restaurants in these. The tourist area of Paphos is also good for a stroll along the marina and a BBQ Corn on the Cob. Overall a very good break.
