Home description

The Pilstyes is a Grade II listed village house situated in the north end of Lindfield High Street in an enviable position close to all the village amenities, including 5 pubs within easy walking distance, Thia restaurant. smart bistro, 3 churches, butcher, chemists, supermarket, newsagents, bakers, greengrocers, bookshop, violin maker, shoe shop, dress shops,, art gallery, florists, hairdresser.

The house was built in 1575 and is divided into two cottages. The owners, Roy and Carol, live in one (where they do Bed and Breakfast) and let the other. The cottage has its own entrance from the High Street and combines many period features such as exposed wall and ceiling oak timbers and leaded light windows to the front elevation. It is the quintessential English cottage that everyone dreams about. However, it has all modern conveniences. Fully equipped small kitchen; living/dining room; two bedrooms, one with 4 poster double bed and one with two single beds. The bathroom has an aqualisa shower/bath. It also has its own private courtyard sitting area.

This is a great place to do nothing and unwind and potter to your hearts content, walk in the countryside(Lindfield is part of the Ouse Valley Walk) visit Brighton and the coast, go up to London to a Show or all of these things!!! National Trust properties and gardens abound in this part of Sussex and the Bluebell Railway is only 10 mins away. Why not travel First Class to Horsted Keynes (the next village and train stop) by steam. Great Fun. Ashdown Forest, Sheffield Park, Wakehurst Place, Leonardslee, Nymans, Borde Hill Gardens are but a few of the interesting places to visit locally with Sissinghurst and Hever, etc. within easy driving distance too.

The South East England / Sussex region

The south Downs of Sussex stretch along the south coast of sussex to the North Downs of Kent and over the vast stretches of the Weald. (Lindfield is part of the Weald). The climate is generally the best on offer in England at most times of the year. The county has much of interest to the holiday maker. Brighton with its Royal Pavilion, great shopping and clubs or Hartfield (East Sussex) where one can take a picnic and play Pooh Sticks and have a peaceful walk in the countryside. The main town is Lewes (12 miles away) has a castle and museum and is famous for its November 5th Bonfire Night societies, where images of hated figures are burnt after a prossession through the town with burning torches and tarred barrels.

Haywards Heath / Lindfield Village area

Haywards Heath grew up around the Railway in the 19th. Century. It is prosperous modern town with offices and good restaurants and chain stores. On the other hand Lindfield is an historic village and every house in the high street is different with many being medieval. The High Street is lined with pollarded Lime trees and in Spring crocus and daffodils line the grassed pathways. It has won the Best Kept Village in Sussex award many times, to the extent that it was banned from entering because other villages never stood a chance of winning!! Our house, which we believe was built around 1575 has a sandstone plinth (probably taken from a sacked monestry after Henry VIII converted us all to protestants.) Claud Fergus (whose family ownned the house for 150 years until 1998 when we moved here) believed that there had been a house standing on this site since the 10th century. There is a beautifully made standstone well. We understand that the name Pilstyes is old english meaning Pond in a Field, next door the house is called Roaches (it is Edwardian but another wooden house was knocked down to build it). Probably roaches were fished from the pond. The house on the corner next to Roaches is Spongs, which means corner of the field. There we are some useless information but very interesting. Although we dont have any old title deeds to the house we do have parchment leases dating back to 1625, which we are always happy to show people. Lindfield has a wonderful Common with a thriving Cricket Team. We also have a tennis club, bowls club, stall ball club, Every thursday morning the local Womens Institute hold a market in King Edward's Hall opposite the famous LIndfield Pond.
