The South East England region

Sussex is in the south east of England stretching along the English Channel from Rye in the east to Chichester Harbour and Emsworth in the west with many fine blue flag beaches in between.

The chalk downland of the South Downs cover a large part of Sussex from where they meet the sea at Beachy Head in East Sussex through to the Hampshire border near South Harting in the west.

Chichester is the cathedral city of Sussex and Brighton and Hove on the Sussex coast is considered to be one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Europe. Arundel and Lewes are two historic towns within the county both have imposing castles and are popular towns to visit.

The climate enjoyed in Sussex is above the average for Great Britain, which makes it ideal for visiting throughout the year.

Haywards Heath

Scaynes Hill is a small mid Sussex village just a short drive east from Haywards Heath offering a choice of country pubs in the near vicinity. This is a great area from which to explore, whether that's enjoying walking locally or to visit the wide choice of attractions that are so accessible from Silver Birch Cottage. We always say that Sussex has so much to offer that is easily accessible. It is close to London for ease of access, The South Downs are never far away, the coast is within 30 minutes and the majority of visitor attractions are inside one hour of travel. Stay in the heart of the county and this is particularly the case with Borde Hill Gardens, Wakehurst Place and Sheffield Park Gardens all within a fifteen minute drive.

The famous Bluebell Railway right next to Sheffield Park Gardens is five miles away. It is the preservation of the local branch line that reopened in 1960 and runs north through Horsted Keynes and on to East Grinstead. The line recreates life on a branch line from the Victorian era right through to the 1950's.

To the north are other popular attractions such as Standen with its tremendous views over the Wildwood Resevoir, Nymans Gardens and High Beeches Garden. Head north east from the cottage beyond Sheffield Park and you soon reach the Ashdown Forest, with 14,000 acres of lowland heathland that has never been cultivated. It provides a unique habitat for many species of flora and fauna, and of course is the 'home' of Winnie the Pooh!
