The Powys/Brecon Beacons region
The Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is an internationally important protected landscape straddling the border between England and Wales. It is one of the most dramatic and scenic landscape areas in southern Britain.
The Black Mountains (Welsh: Y Mynyddoedd Duon) are a group of hills spread across parts of Powys and Monmouthshire in southeast Wales, and extending across the national border into Herefordshire, England. They are the easternmost of the four ranges of hills that comprise the Brecon Beacons National Park.
The Brecon Beacons National Park was established in 1957. It was the tenth area in England and Wales to be given such status. The National Park is a playground for tourists and outdoor enthusiasts alike, but you don't have to run up mountains before breakfast to enjoy what it has to offer.
A totally idyllic area from which to enjoy a range of activities in the area, such as walking, riding, cycling, canoeing, white water rafting, climbing, or just browsing the bookshops in the world famous book town, Hay-on-Wye. Of course you can just come and enjoy a peaceful break in rural secluded surroundings or explore many miles of national parks.
Premier Lodges are thoughtfully situated on separate parts of a free-range livestock farm, with their own private driveways so that holidaymakers can enjoy privacy and seclusion. Nestled just below the ridge of Clyro Hill, the lodges have spectacular views of Hay Bluff, the Black Mountains and the Wye Valley, whilst enjoying the shelter of nearby oak and ash trees.

"A relaxing get away in the countryside..."
To summarise: a very relaxing week away in a charming, peaceful area. The only reason I scored this place down was that the facilities didn't quite live up to my expectations. My main disappointments were no wifi or DVD player as we'd seen advertised and we thought we would have two double bedrooms but actually it is one double and one twin which couldn't really be made into a double.
My husband and I stayed in Penry's Lodge for one week. It was exactly as the photos on the website. I wouldn't describe it as "luxury" but it was very comfortable with plenty of space and all the facilities we needed. It did have little luxuries such as a dishwasher and TV (Freeview only) however as mentioned above no Wifi or a DVD player as advertised (on holidaylettings not on their own website though) - a disappointment mostly because we had quite poor phone signal (both O2) and had brought a selection of DVDs to watch in the evenings. However there was plenty on TV for us to watch which compensated for the latter. The only other thing to mention is that the shower water is from a spring which means it had a bit of a funny smell to it. A little disconcerting but it was powerful enough and nice and warm. Also the shower is off the double bedroom - worth bearing in mind if more than one family is staying there.
I think this place would be ideal if you have a young family and/or want to take your dog or horse on holiday with you (they allow both). Also, if you want a total getaway from it all sort of holiday in the countryside living the rural life then this is definitely for you! The farmer, Tony, was so kind to us and even brought us some field mushrooms he'd picked for us for breakfast. We had these with the complimentary hen eggs from the farm. The view from the balcony really is spectacular and it's so peaceful with just the noise of the farm animals occassionally.
You definitely need a car to stay here but it's ideally located for Hay-on-Wye, the Brecon Beacons, the Elan Valley and beyond. My husband and I drove all over the place and did some fantastic walks including one that takes you behind a waterfall. We did gorge-walking through the Black Mountain Activity Centre which was great fun (highly recommend them for outdoor activities) and went to see red kites feeding at the Red Kite Centre outside of Llandrindod Wells.
We only ate out once at a pub called The Boat. Excellent food and the BIGGEST steak you have ever seen! Otherwise there was everything in the kitchen for home cooking and a BBQ which we tried out once.
I would recommend this place to others but would make sure they went with realistic expectations of the lodge. If you're after a pristine, brand new lodge with all mod cons then this place is not for you.
Many thanks for your review and feedback. We are always available for any problems or service which is lacking. Our home is right next door to the lodge. Unfortunately we were unaware the wi-fi wasn't working until the next guests arrived. The DVD player was missing from the lodge and was an oversight by us. We hope that if you come again you will contact us so we can resolve issues immediately if at all possible. Many thanks again for your review
