The Scottish Borders region

The Scottish Borders is lightly populated so its the ideal location to slow down and relax in beautiful countryside. The scenery is quite dramatic in places and ideal for those the open air. There are some very pretty Border towns with great places to visit including the Heritage Hub and Cashmere Centre in Hawick, abbeys at Kelso, Jedburgh and Melrose and stunning country houses such at Floors Castle and walter Scott's Bemersyde. Some of the leisure centres have super facilities but without irritating bustle. For the more active sailing, diving, horse riding and mountain biking are all within easy reach.

Hawick

Hawick is steeped in history. It was continually under threat during the Middles Ages when Scotland and England waged war almost continuously. This is reiving country and Hawick Common Riding, held in June annually, gives you a flavour of the importance of horse riding during those turbulent times. Equally Hawick is the centre of the Scottish Cashmere industry and there's no better place to buy that most luxurious gift. It all started back in the 18th century with the introduction of the first stocking frame to the town heralding the start of the industrial revolution locally. Hawick folk are friendly and quick to help visitors find the most interesting places to visit.

"Well worth a visit"

This is a lovely secluded cottage in splendid countryside and within easy reach of Hawick and other local area. The cottage is comfortable and we were warmly welcomed by Mr and Mrs Turnbull. The local town has some good shops - including an excellent off-licence, a splendid tea room and no less than three "proper" butchers.
Eating out choices in Hawick are a bit limited but the Italian restaurant has a good selection at reasonable prices.
