Northern England region

Wensleydale is one of the prettiest dales in the area. The hillsides are criss-crossed by drystone walls and dotted with curly-horned sheep. It has a variety of attractions such as the castles of Middleham and Bolton Castle, waterfalls like Hardraw (England's highest unbroken fall of water), West Burton and Aysgarth with its three waterfalls, churches like St Oswald's, Askrigg and St Margaret's, Hawes.

Further afield you can drive north over the Buttertubs pass and venture into Swaledale to the villages of Muker, Thwaite and Keld, south west across Widdale to Ingleton which has the longest show cave in Britain, and on to the delightful market town of Kirkby Lonsdale, or eastwards to Masham and visit a brewery or see a glassmaker at work.

If you prefer walking there are so many routes to choose from, in fact the Pennine Way goes through the villages of Gayle and Hawes. (There is lots of information about good walks in the cottage.)

Children will love the Forbidden Corner near Middleham or a ride on the newly restored Wensleydale railway from Redmire to Leeming. The choice is endless and the views breathtaking.

The market town of Hawes offers an array of pubs, restaurants and interesting shops. Market Day is Tuesday.

There are two major local attractions in Gayle itself : Gayle Mill, a working sawmill which offers tours, demonstrations and special events, and Wensleydale Creamery Visitors Centre, where you can see cheese being made, and sample the many varieties of Wallace and Gromit's favourite in the cheese shop. It also has its own restaurant and coffee shop.

In Hawes you can visit the Ropemaker's or the nearby Countryside Museum, which has exhibitions throughout the year, demo days where you see traditional skills brought to life, like drystone walling, spinning and weaving; there are have-a-go activities, walks and talks and it is the local Tourist Information Office. Spend a quiet day by the lake at Semerwater and visit the village of Stalling Busk where you can sample the local jams and chutneys.
