The Northern England / Yorkshire/Yorkshire Dales region
From heather-clad moors and bold limestone scars, to lively market towns and the steady pace of country life - the sublime Dales await you! Where else in Britain is it as satisfying to sit and do nothing as it is to explore the numerous pursuits on offer?
Surely, nowhere as much as in the Yorkshire Dales? Both a National Park and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the region’s stunning scenery includes rolling hay meadows, striking limestone formations, grand heather-laden moors and picture-postcard perfect villages. A paradise for walkers, the Yorkshire Dales attract enthusiasts from far and wide as the long distance Pennine Way and Coast-to-Coast routes pass through the area. Cycling through the Dales is also popular – keen cyclists will enjoy the varied scenery and occasional ‘hilly’ sections of the 130 miles of Yorkshire Dales Cycleway, as it winds its way through Swaledale, Wensleydale and Coverdale. All of this, as well as exploring the imposing rock formations, echoing caves and potholes, will satisfy the most adventurous spirit, whilst Semer Water, the largest natural lake in Yorkshire, will keep any water-sport enthusiast happy. If you’re looking for more relaxing pursuits, there’s much more to see than magnificent scenery.
Stone-built villages nestling in valley bottoms, picturesque towns with vibrant craft centres and markets, imposing castles, stunning gardens and fine architecture are all part of the Dales’ appeal. Grassington, Wharfedale’s main town, boasts beautiful cobbled streets and quaint shops that take the visitor on a journey back in time, whilst the lively town of Hawes is home to the award winning Dales Countryside Museum, a fascinating range of shops and craft galleries and a sample or two of the famous ‘Wensleydale’ cheese at the Creamery is a treat not to be missed!
The Hawes area
The delightful market town of Hawes is the highest settlement in Wensleydale and home to the delicious Wensleydale cheese. The town is also famous for rope making; a skill passed down through the generations and a fascination for many of the visitors that come to the town. A regular market is held on a Tuesday and Hawes has many excellent shops and eateries in its midst. The beautiful limestone countryside surrounding the town provides a huge variety of walks and other outdoor pursuits, and for sightseeing opportunities the area is unsurpassed with the spectacular Hardraw Force and the Aysgarth falls just two of the natural wonders to be seen. Hawes is a delightful town and makes a superb base for a holiday in this magnificent area.

We enjoyed the scenery and walks. We found the cottage was very comfortable and we were impressed by the kindliness and imagination of the owners in welcoming us and letting us know all those things that made life easier

,Great location for easy access to fabulous breathtaking scenery, fabulous walks nearby, great train link for the one day it rained. Lovely welcome including jar of the best homemade marmalade I ever tasted, the freshest eggs and other little extras to make us feel at home.
Mrs Eddon, Borehamwood, Hertfordshire

,Very well-appointed. Almost every item one wanted was there. Nice to have a pub, 'The Moorcock' that one could walk to (10 mins)!
