We spent a romantic week in Lachaud in 1993 & fell in love with this house, the area & above all the people! By the end of the week we had secured our little patch of France! The house had not been occupied for over 30 years & was in desperate need of some TLC! Blood, sweat, tears & lots of laughter have transformed it into the wonderful home you see today & we look forward to welcoming you! The accommodation is equally suited to extended families, friends or couples. With its 5 Ensuite bedrooms & large living areas there's plenty of space for everyone.

The beautiful countryside will appeal to nature lovers & offers fantastic walking, cycling, bird watching & photography opportunities. If culture & History is more you, you'll be just 20mins drive from UNESCO's World Heritage Site of Lascaux & the Vézère Valley. We are only 16 miles from the Base de Loisirs de Rouffiac at Lanouaille which offers glorious sandy beaches & all watersports plus paint-balling, rock climbing & Archery. Activities are accessible to all and are supervised by qualified instructors.

We do not live on site and we'll leave you to privately enjoy your holiday, we are however only a phone call away should you have any problems or need advice. Pets with responsible owners are most welcome!

The Aquitaine/Dordogne region

The Dordogne département is for many people the picture-perfect image of the French countryside, a gentle landscape of patchwork fields, hilltop towns, turreted mansions and jade-green woods. Named after the most important of the region's seven rivers, the Dordogne is better-known to the French as Périgord, spiritual home to two of the country's enduring culinary passions – foie gras and the black truffle. The Dordogne is famous for its stunning cave paintings, as well as for its many fortified chateaux and bastide towns – reminders of the bloody battles waged here during the Middle Ages and the Hundred Years' War.

The Périgord is famed for its food & hospitality & the excellent local restaurants & Auberge are too numerous to mention here, more details are available at the house. Perigueux & Sarlat markets are not to be missed!

There are reportedly 1001 châteaux in the Dordogne - you'll need more than a fortnight to see them all! The local ones are Hautefort, Château de Losse and Château d'Eyrignac.

Limeuil, situated where the Rivers Dordogne and Vézère meet is classed as one of the most beautiful villages in France. A bustling river port of old, the medieval village with its stone-built, dark-tiled houses so typical of Périgord Noir is now a charming, refreshing place in which to stop and the evening market is a must.

Caves and caverns are everywhere in this region, they are all spectacular; La Grotte de Tourtoirac is the closest and is accessible to all including pushchairs.

I could go on and on! But I'll let you discover all that the Perigord has to offer - you'll be amazed!

Hautefort

We are only 16 miles from the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lascaux. A cave containing one of the most outstanding displays of prehistoric art yet discovered, located above the Vézère River valley near Montignac. It is a short distance upstream from another major cave-art site, Eyzies-de-Tayac. The two sites, with some two dozen other painted caves and 150 prehistoric settlements in the Vézère valley, were added to UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1979. Discovered by four teenage boys in September 1940, the cave was first studied by the French archaeologist Henri-Édouard-Prosper Breuil. It consists of a main cavern (some 66 feet [20 meters] wide and 16 feet [5 meters] high) and several steep galleries, all magnificently decorated with engraved, drawn, and painted figures. In all there are some 600 painted and drawn animals and symbols, along with nearly 1,500 engravings.

We are 2 and a half hours drive from the great surfing beaches west of Bordeaux but don't let that stop you enjoying your favorite watersports! We are only 16 miles from the Base de Loisirs de Rouffiac at Lanouaille which offers glorious sandy beaches & all watersports plus paint-balling, rock climbing & Archery. Activities are accessible to all and are supervised by qualified instructors.

La Forêt at Thenon 10 mins away, www.appel-de-la-foret.com is suitable for those aged 7 to 70! A little too high for me! though the children love it and even hubby made it to the hardest stage!

Canoeing down the Vézère river is a must whatever your age! Passing by fabulous countryside, châteaux & historic villages. Stop for a swim & a pique-nique; it really is delightful! Book with any of the local centres, canoes, oars, lifejackets and waterproof containers are all supplied. Start at Montignac and select your distance depending on your group, the canoe company will then pick you up and bring you back to your car.
