The Fjord Norway region
Norwegian fjords are famous world wide. A fjord is a valley formed by glaciers and filled with the sea to form a steep-walled inlet. You will find two of the world’s three longest fjords in Norway. UNESCO has included Norwegian fjords on its World Heritage List, and National Geographic has ranked Norwegian fjords the most popular of all World Heritage sites.
The fjords were carved out in a succession of Ice Ages. The ice retreated 10-12 000 years ago and has made the Norwegian fjords famous world wide. Experience a fjord cruise, try hiking on a glacier or go skiing in the middle of the summer.
Haugesund area
Haugesund is the regional centre and has all the shopping amenities you could possibly hope for. The city centre offers more than 300 different stores and there is a shopping centre, chain stores, individual niche stores all situated in a charming environment. Just outside the city centre you will find large shopping centres with all sorts of shops united under one roof. Amanda and Oasen are the largest ones, competing harder than ever to give you the best offers possible. In terms of shopping, Haugesund is indeed a city to keep in mind.
Local products and specialities The region offers a wide variety of shops with local products and specialities. Here is a selection: Loiten Lys is the largest producer of hand-made candlelights in Norway. Take a walk in their basement and see how they make some of the most beautiful candlelights in Norway, following interior design trends as well as special yearly events. If you are interested in more craftwork, we recommend the Himmel & Hav Art Café in the picturesque town of Skudeneshavn, the Fugl Fønix Galleri in Etne, and Galleri Å’Godt in Sandeid. These places give you the opportunity to see local art in a charming atmosphere and in great natural surroundings. Other local handmade products that are offered throughout our region are knitted clothing and textiles. One of these stores is Garnkroa in Haugesund specialising in making national costumes, sweaters, different kinds of embroideries, and much more.
Salmon is a product that Norwegians are proud of, and one of the most dedicated producers of the tasteful fish is situated on Karmøy, thus the name Karmøy Laks. Their products are produced by an age-old traditional curing method, and have a unique taste you cannot find anywhere else.
