The West Country / Devon region

Devon for the most part has a mild climate with sufficient rainfall to keep the landscape lush and green. It is one of the most renowned dairy and beef farming areas of the UK if not the world. Dartmoor is at its heart with 100 square miles of rugged moorland it is unique in southern England. Devon's coastline is steeped in seafaring tradition and was home to Sir Francis Drake, Sir Walter Raleigh, Grenville and Hawkins and the Plymouth and Dartmouth area have been central to British naval history for several centuries and are easy to visit. Apart from agricultural activities there has been a long tradition of mining in the Devon and Cornwall region and this was the basis of much of the region's wealth.
The Hatherleigh / Black Torrington area
Black Torrington is a quiet picturesque village between the market towns of Hatherleigh and Holsworthy and the original home of the Reverend Jack Russell and his dogs. Garden lovers should visit the RHS Gardens Rosemoor at Torrington and visit nearby Dartington crystal. The Big Sheep and Milky Way are fun attractions for children within easy reach. Cycle the Tarka Trail. Close to Dartmoor and the renowned north Cornwall surfing beaches.
Golf at Holsworthy, Okehampton, Bude, Westward Ho, Saunton and Moretonhampstead.
Visit Clovelly and Lundy Island. Pony Trekking on Dartmoor. Many rivers and lakes to fish.
