The West Country / Devon region
Devon for the most part has a mild climate with sufficient rainfall to keep the landscape lush and green. It is one of the most renowned dairy and beef farming areas of the UK if not the world. Dartmoor is at its heart with 100 square miles of rugged moorland it is unique in southern England. Devon's coastline is steeped in seafaring tradition and was home to Sir Francis Drake, Sir Walter Raleigh, Grenville and Hawkins and the Plymouth and Dartmouth area have been central to British naval history for several centuries and are easy to visit. Apart from agricultural activities there has been a long tradition of mining in the Devon and Cornwall region and this was the basis of much of the region's wealth.
