Fern Cottage
About the home
Fern cottage is owned by a local artist and her husband and sits within the owners secure, electric gated grounds. Built in an English heritage style it has exposed beams with a stunning interior and a private olde English cottage garden. It is located on the outskirts of town, but is under a 4 minute drive away from central St. Leonards and the Seafront.
For the second year running Fern cottage has been awarded the AA self catering 4 star certificate.
St. Leonards is quirky, has some great architecture, interesting streets, with shops offering everything from every day necessities, to antiques. Along the seafront there are art galleries, coffee shops and a cultural mix of eating places. Its close neighbour Hastings with its Old Town, working fishing beach, smugglers caves, traditional seaside activities, museums, and much more is an historic gem, waiting for you to explore.
Surrounding St. Leonards are many pretty villages and towns, the nearest being Battle (famous for the1066 Battle of Hastings). Along the coast is Eastbourne which sits at the foot of the South Downs National Park (a must for walkers), and further up the coast is the town of Brighton (nick-named Little London), which has a lively bohemian atmosphere, evident both day and night.
London itself is easily reached via Warrior Square Station (mainline to Charing Cross) , and West St, Leonards Station, to London Victoria (via Lewes). A 1hr 45min journey takes you right into the heart of London.

St. Leonards, East Sussex, is an historic seaside town, surrounded by rolling fields, and Chalk Downs. It has more than the average hours of UK sunshine, beauty, history, and its close proximity to London, make it a popular holiday destination. Traditional England is what's on offer here, the seaside; villages; old pubs; castles; historic houses; parks and gardens, and much more.
The Hastings, Sussex / St Leonards on Sea area
St. Leonards was created by builder James Burton in 1827-1837 and added to by his son Decimus Burton in 1850s - 1860s. Popular with royalty and the aristocracy it gradually expanded and merged with Hastings. Some of the oldest houses in Hastings can be found in All Saints Street (Old Town), and date back to 1450.
On the beach stand the wooden fishing huts which are still in use today as storage for nets and ropes by Hastings fishing fleet, which is the largest beech moored fishing fleet in the UK.
Cut into the cliffs are the East and West Cliff funicular railways. The West takes passengers up to spectacular views across the Old Town, Fishing Beech and gives a seaside panorama. The East takes passengers up to the hills of Hastings Country Park (a must for walkers). Places to visit in Hastings include:
Fishermens museum and market.
Blue Reef Aquarium
Hastings Museum and Art Gallery
Old Town Museum
Clambers Play Centre
Alexandra Park

We stayed here for a week in September and we were very pleased with the accommodation. The house is very well designed and furnished. The double bed is exceedingly comfortable - so rare in holiday... more |

We had a wonderful time at Fern cottage. Myself, My Wife and two teenage children stayed for the last week in August, and we would recommend it without hesitation. We were greeted warmy by Peter & Viv (the owners) on arrival, and found wine and chocolates waiting for us. One big advantage of this property is that the owners live close by, so and issues (not that we had any) can be addressed very quickly. The cottage itself is spacious and well equipped, but still has a cosy feel to it, and the nice, secluded private garden was a lovely place to sit and polish off the wine! Beds were very comfortable, and having two showers is a real blessing when one has a teenage daughter. The area is great, with shops and supermarkets close by, and Hastings itself is lovely place, with plenty of things for kids and adults to do. The train station is about half a mile away, and has regular services direct to Charing Cross, right in the heart of London. All in all, we had a great time, and wouldnt hesitate to book this cottage again. |

The initial attraction was that the owners accepted credit cards which made currency issues a lot easier, had a parking place next to the cottage, and were very helpful with general travel enquiries... more |
