The South East England / Sussex region
William the Conqueror chose the sunny south-east to visit, and so should you! Loads of battle events, castles, and the small town of Battle where it all happened. October is the month to experience its re-enactment. It was Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn's favourite hunting ground too and they've left their mark in castles, hunting lodges and the greatest Royal hunting ground, Ashdown Forest.
As well as being officially the warmest and driest area of the UK, this part of Sussex is packed with beautiful countryside for walking, nature reserves, architecture, gardens, live music, artistic and sporting interest, and it's the birthplace of motor racing.
There is unique birdwatching in the shingle habitats of Rye Harbour and Dungeness. Walking on the 1066 coastal walkway, the glorious clifftop Country Park, Brede Valley, the Cuckoo Trail, water sports on Bewl Water, the best modernist architecture in Britain and the full range of live music from classical at the De La Warr Pavilion to blues, jazz, bluegrass, Cajun, country and western, folk and tribute bands in most of the old fishing pubs.
Then there's Sissinghurst, Great Dixter, the homes of Rudyard Kipling, Winston Churchill, Anne Boleyn, Henry James, William Logie Baird, John Martyn...........everybody loves it here!
The Hastings, Sussex area
St Leonards arrived in the elegant mid-19C when James and Decimus Burton designed and built the exquisite Burton St Leonards and when every development had its garden, its square or its lake. And at the other end of the town nestles the beautiful, intriguing and even older Hastings Old Town where the last remaining beached commercial fishing fleet in Europe squats on the shingle among the famous net huts.
This town has so many artists, writers and musicians per square yard that you cannot help running into art galleries, live music and commemorative blue plaques of historic resident authors wherever you look.
There are festivals here every month from July to December. September is my favourite with the Coastal Currents Arts Festival in Hastings and St Leonards and a great one in Rye; the famous Hastings Seafood and Wine festival as well. October is the month to re-experience all the aspects of the 1066 Battle of Hastings.
And not forgetting the kids, the fabulous seaside fairground, Crazy Golf, Sea Life, museums, the Clambers in and outdoor Total Child Experience, Smugglers Caves, the home of Winnie the Pooh and Piglet, and so much more.

This apartment was so beautiful and so well equipped, I just had to write a review! Ellen was so nice to deal with. We had no problems finding the apartment, and the key was right where she... more |

Fabulous apartment, light, airy and so much room! So grand we kept expecting the butler to appear and offer us drinks. We enjoyed a wonderful stay, and wished we could stay longer. The small garden with access directly into Warrior Square with its huge rose gardens is a real gem, and having views across the gardens to the sea beyond is priceless. Only about 5 minutes walk to the train station, and St Leonards shopping area and convenience stores close by too. Hastings with its larger shops and seaside facilities is only a very pleasant 20 minute stroll along the beachfront promenade. The apartment was all we hoped for and more, and thank Ellen sincerely for sharing it with us. We would most certainly stay there agin, in fact can't wait to do so!! |
Guestbook for Lindsey Mansions
...we can honestly say that we thoroughly enjoyed our Christmas holidays in your beautiful apartment. The log fires and sea view every day were pure luxury! We felt like kings!
The apartment offered us everything we needed, the kitchen was really well equipped and the lovely bedrooms
and living room made us feel right at home.
Thanks for the wonderful time.....
We had the best weather we've ever had on a trip to Hastings this weekend, so didn't spend as much time as we'd have liked in your glorious, beautifully furnished, much-nicer-than-our-place apartment. If your flat is this nice, we wonder what your real house must be like....
Like others, found it a joy to have such a well-equipped kitchen and your detailed local recommendations.
Thank you very much for a wonderful week in your magnificent flat! One week is not enough to enjoy all the restaurants and shops/galleries around...
From the moment I saw your house on the website, I knew how much I wanted to be here in your front room overlooking the gardens and the sea - and it is as wonderful as I thought it would be. This has been our most relaxing holiday ever...
