The Northern England / Yorkshire/Yorkshire Dales region

Yorkshire is a delightful county with something for everyone.
There's the coast line which ranges from the sedate English seaside towns like Saltburn and Scarborough to the rugged and wildlife havens of Flamborough Head. Where you may spot whales , seal, puffins etc.
The North Yorkshire moors and dales are renowned as National Parks and there are great places to visit like Fountains Abbey and Newby Hall, Bolton Abbey.
Civilisation is not far away too with places like the ancient city of York and the Spa town of Harrogate. Museums abound here too plus there's the Royal Armoury at Leeds.
Shopping is a must, if you like antiques, Harrogate and York are the places to visit. Clothes either Harrogate, York or Leeds which has a Harvey Nichols.
The lakes can be visited in a day, about 2 hours away.
Brimham rocks about 20 mins from Harrogate well worth visiting with the kids lots of rocks to climb. Also for the children is Lightwater Valley theme park just outside Ripon.
Fountains Abbey, Newby Hall, near by. Bolton Abbey, Rievauix Abbey, Harewood House, Jervaulx Abbey are a little further away .
Race courses abound. Wetherby, Ripon, Thirsk York all nearby.
So much to do so little time to do it. You won't be disappointed in the beauty of the Yorkshire Dales and Moors.
There really is plenty to do!
The Harrogate / Knaresborough area
Locally there's the ruins of Knaresborough castle and a gentle stroll down the river, or even take a boat out on the River Nidd. The second Saturday in June the Knaresborough hosts the famous bed race, a great day out.
There's also Mother Shipton's Cave - a local attraction which shown items petrified in Mother Shipton's cave. You may even see Mother Shipton from time to time in Knaresborough, though she's been dead for hundreds of years!
Harrogate is a very pretty spa town. Good shopping, great restaurants. On the outskirts there is the RHS Harlow
Carr which you may have seen on television. A lovely little theatre, the conference centre and the Royal Hall, there are always plays or shows on, why not cheek out their websites if you like that sort of thing. Spring and Autumn Flower Show at the Great Yorkshire Showground. The Great Yorkshire Show held the 2nd week of July.
Boroughbridge, a small town with some nice little shops, a great deli. Some great coffee stops too.
Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate in July. Music festival in July. Flower show in Harrogate in April and October.
Staveley it self has a great pub the Royal Oak which does great food and serves good ale. Staveley also has the fortune of having a nature reserve run by the Wild Life Trust, so bring your binoculars, camera and walking boots.

This was without a doubt one of the best places I have ever stayed on a trip. It was immaculate, warm , had everything you may need, and the owners were extremely helpful. I would recommend this accomodation to anyone, and I'm sure we will rent this cottage again, fantastic. Thanks Julie! Gabi Aberdeen |
Guestbook for The Farthings
1. We had a perfect week in your lovely cottage. Everything was so thoughtfully arranged, including the welcome drink.
2. Thank you for your fantastic hospitality. Our week in your wonderful bungalow helped us completely relax.
3. We had a thoroughly enjoyable stay in the cottage. The little touches that you made were so appreciated and made our stay so comfortable........
4.Little did I know when I booked this UK break a couple of months ago that we would be engulfed in the worst December weather in over 300 years! The fact is, that we have enjoyed a weeks holiday here and that is entirely down to you Julie and Paul and your magnificent efforts in making The Farthings one of the warmest, cosiest and most comfortable cottages.
Thank you is wholly inadequate, suffice to say that we will always remember your kindness and generosity.
5. A gorgeous cottage, we'll be back.
6. Thank you so much for giving us a warm welcome. The cottage has been a lovely place to stay whilst we have been exploring this part of Yorkshire.
7. What a welcome treat! Thanks for the homely welcome and especially the delicious scones and cream. We love th area, and your cottage was a perfect short retreat.
8. Thank you for the lovely stay in your bungalow. We have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves travelling around and coming back to relax in your very pretty home.
9.Thank you for the warm welcome in this beautiful cottage, well equipped and cosy. We enjoyed pleasant hours in the lovely garden. This was our first stay in Yorkshire where there is so much to explore, we look forward to next year when we will come again and enjoy this beautiful county.
10. Despite our all too short break being marred by illness, we have absolutely loved staying at The Farthings. It is great testament to your homemaking skills that, despite feeling fairly grim, I did not long for my own home- this felt homely to me and I was more than happy to poorly here! We would like to say a huge thank you for your kindness and thoughtfulness and hope that we can return soon to explore the area.
11. Thank you for good service given with a smile. Great accommodation with easy access to towns and lovely villages and countryside, Will come again.
