The Cap Bon Peninsula region

Nabeul is the second largest tourist centre in the region. It also has beautiful large beaches. But the old Neapolis is attractive for another reason: it is one of the centres for dynamic and diversified crafts, with particular emphasis on pottery and ceramics.

The town is also known for its embroidery, lace and handmade perfumes. Discover the ancient past of the town at the archaeological museum. On Fridays, wander through the market to see all the different kinds of animals, foodstuffs and products on offer.

Carthage: the capital of all Mediterranean trade for over 7 centuries, this town was razed to the ground by the Romans before being rebuilt by Julius Caesar. Now, you can explore the ancient city: the amphitheatre, the Antonin thermal baths, the Punic ports, etc.

Sidi Bou Saïd: a picturesque "artists" village, painted completely in blue and white
Tunis: the capital city since 1160, Tunis is a true reflection of its history. Visit the souks in the médina, the great mosque, Jamaa Ez-Zitouna (founded in 732, it is the largest in Tunis and the most important religious centre in North Africa), the national Bardo museum which has one of the finest collections of Roman mosaics in the world, the new town and more.

Monastir: at the very south of the Hammamet Gulf, Monastir has become a large seaside resort. Explore the Ribat, a majestic building with crenulated walls built at the very end of the 18th century, the Bourguiba Mausoleum, the médina, souks and more.

Kairouan: the holiest of all the cities in North Africa, Kairouan is considered to be the fourth holy city of Islam. Discover the great mosque, Sidi Okba, the Aghlabid pools (thousand-year-old reservoirs), the Sidi Sahab mausoleum, the médina with its local crafts: e.g. the knot stitch carpet

Sousse: founded over 3000 years ago, Sousse was the strategic port of the Aghlabid Empire for its conquests in Europe via Sicily. Wander through the médina, souks, etc.

Port El Kantaoui: a beautiful lively seaside resort.

Hammamet area

In the space of fifty years, Hammamet has become a highly tourist-oriented seaside resort at the centre of the best beaches, hotels, golf courses and attractions. Wealthy Tunisians have also had second homes built there, a sure sign of the beauty of the site. In spite of the thousands of tourists taking it over each year, the town has kept a certain charm.

In the old town of Hammamet, you will be able to explore:

• The Medina: the old walled city of Hammamet
• The souk where you will be able to buy leather goods, carpets, pottery, spices, jewellery, etc.
• The weekly market every Thursday
• The Kasbah, built in the fifteenth century on the site of an old fort which was the headquarters of the Foreign Legion
• The magnificent Arab-Muslim style villa Sebastian (avenue des Nations Unies): the former home of the Romanian billionaire, George Sebastian, it became the property of the State in 1959 and now houses the International Cultural Centre
