The Hammamet/Cap Bon Peninsula region

You’ll find Hammamet has some of the best beaches in Tunisia. But a walk round the walled Medina, visiting the kasbah and the lively souk is also a must. Known as the ‘garden of Tunisia’, the Cap Bon Peninsula offers unique historic sites, from legendary Carthage to the ruins of Kerkouane.
Barely 87 miles from Sicily, the Cap Bon peninsula successfully juggles agriculture (the region’s principal industry) with the international attraction of its historic ruins and outstanding beaches. Here you’ll find the old fort and bustling harbour of La Goulette, which back in the 16th century was a stronghold for pirates, along with many thriving citrus farms, which, with their fresh and intoxicating perfume filling the air, you’ll smell long before you see.

There are carefully tended vineyards too, so don’t forget to check out the annual wine festival held every September in the superb wine district of Grombalia. As for the beaches, you’ll be spoilt for choice, whether you want to stretch out and soak up the sun at the beautiful beach resorts of Hammamet and Nabeul, or set out to discover the hidden treasures of the less visited, more rugged west coast.

Hammamet / Yasmine Hammamet area

Hammamet is possibly the best-known resort in Tunisia. It has changed greatly from the small fishing village it once was, evolving into a sought-after holiday resort in the 1920’s. Known as the ‘garden resort’ it is backed by olive, orange and lemon groves and lines of cypress trees. Yasmine Hammamet is Tunisia’s newest resort. Situated just south of Hammamet, it is made up of predominantly four and five star luxury hotels and luxury villas and apartments. Built around a 740-berth marina, it recreates the style of many elegant resorts around the Mediterranean. There is a sophisticated new Medina, with luxurious boutiques, cafés and restaurants, theatres and museums and a fabulous residential complex.
