The Normandy / Manche region

Normandy is renowned throughout France for its lush green countryside, its cider and its cheeses. The 'coast of great tides' produces some of the best seafood in the world. We have history, with cathedrals, castles and hamlets from mediaeval times, to the landing beaches and battlefields of World War II.

There are gorges, waterfalls, hills and rocks, winding rivers, and huge sandy beaches: so much variety. Most of all, Normandy offers a relaxed and gentle way of life, and the people here are friendly and warm-hearted.
The Mont St Michel is unforgettable, less than an hour away.

Hambye / Villebaudon area

Within half an hour you can be in Villedieu-les-Poeles, famous copper town with its working bell foundry, Coutances with its beautiful cathedral - come in May for 'Jazz sous les Pommiers' - , the port of Granville with its walled old town and fascinating history, the beaches and dunes near Brehal. The peaceful setting of the Abbey at Hambye is even closer, a site which is becoming a cultural centre.

Regular vide-greniers and brocantes, where you can pick up original bric-a-brac, even antiques, offer a good day out for collectors who want to be part of the French way of life. You can find a good market most days.
We continue to be surprised by the range of sporting and leisure activities within easy reach, and are happy to help with bookings, whether you want riding, golf, tree-top trails, canoeing or leisure parks.

Depending on your mood, you could visit a slate mine; a zoo with big cats, monkeys and apes, and their young; lace, furniture, pottery museums; or simply visit our apple-growing neighbours and taste all their liquid produce!

The site is huge and offers many varied corners of interest. Walk down the slope (past our house and Le Moulin) and in the bottom meadows next to the river, you will find a children's play area, the waterfall coming down from the mill-race, and a rope swing under the walnut tree. You can follow the mill-race to the woods, passing the spectacular quarry walls: a tree-lined route which was used by farmers bringing corn to the mill. There are safe open places for little ones to play, as well as fun and challenge for older children. We do however recommend that children are well supervised.

Adults can find a hidden spot on site to take a book, or walk across farmland from the adjacent woodland. Off the main road, there's little traffic, and circular routes to explore the gently rolling Normany countryside.
