La Maison Sans Souci is a charming farmhouse set in the beautiful Normandy countryside a short drive from the village of Hambye. Our two gites, Le Coquelicot and Le Bleuet, are in the converted barn next to the farmhouse and have their own garden with children's play area and games room. Each gite sleeps 6 and can be booked together for larger groups.

Le Coquelicot is located a twenty minute drive from beautiful sandy beaches of the Normandy west coast that never seem to get busy. The warm shallow sea is lovely for swimming and at low tide you can watch the local farmers with their tractors tending the acres of oyster and mussel beds.

A 5 minute drive away is the village of Hambye with its boulangerie for warm French bread and croissants in the morning. It also has a butchers and small supermarket for everyday needs, a bar/tabac, and two small weekly street markets. Nearby is the restaurant at the Auberge de L'Abbee, which has a wonderful ambiance. The varied menu provides a perfect choice for a special meal. The nearby romantic ruins of the Benedictine Hambye Abbey set on the banks of the River Sienne, is also a fascinating place to explore with some beautiful walks round about.

The area provides the perfect opportunity for fishing, walking, cycling, and exploring the cider orchards, as well as sampling delicious food; cheese, cider, pommeau and calvados.

Further details indoors

Le Coquelicot has recently been re-furbished, and offers three bedrooms, two doubles and one twin, a large shower room, an open-plan living area with comfortable seating, a coal effect stove, dining table seating 6, and fully equipped kitchen area. Some of the stone walls have been left exposed, as have the beams in the upstairs rooms. Each bedroom has an electric radiator for those chillier nights.

For the 2014 season, we have re-configured the downstairs layout completely and have moved the kitchen area from its original location under the stairs. The new kitchen area offers increased worktop space, with a dishwasher and washing machine.

In addition, free wifi is now available!

Further details outdoors

The garden is large with views overlooking the local countryside. Le Coquelicot has its own seating area and there is a separate play area for children. At the front of the property is a large lawned area with picnic tables.

Within the barn there is an upstairs games room with table-tennis, table football and a darts board.

The Normandy region

The Normandy region of France combines dramatic coastline, with lush farmland, bustling market towns, and historic landmarks. From the days of William, Duke of Normandy and King of England, to the drama of the Normandy D-Day landings, you will find yourself surrounded by key historical events. Gastronomic delights abound, from the fine cheeses to the fresh fish, to the cider and the Calvados. Add to this the opportunities for walking, cycling, fishing, horse-riding, and water sports; Normandy has it all.

Hambye

Le Guislain is an ideal base from which to explore the many attractions that Normandy has to offer. Within 30 minutes drive are the amazing sandy beaches of the west coast, the busy towns of Coutances and St Lo, and the pretty market town of Villedieu-les-Poeles, the ancient center of the copper industry. Less than an hour away is the picturesque Mont St Michel and in the other direction the famous town of Bayeaux. The Normandy D-Day beaches can also be reached within the hour.

The area offers a wealth of local markets; Villedieu les Poêles has one of the largest markets where you will find a number of producers of local Norman produce: andouille (Norman speciality sausage) cream, butter, eggs, poultry, honey, seafood, fruit and vegetables, flowers, clothes, linen and gifts; Gavray has the exciting livestock market, and throughout July a weekly Norman market.

Within a few minutes drive are a number of local restaurants that serve good value lunchtime menus.

"Nice grounds but VERY small kitchen area"

When we arrived at the gite we realised why no pictures of the kitchen were posted with the description. We had assumed it would be similar to the kitchen in the gite next door; after all, the descrip… More

We were really saddened to read your review of our property as we take great pride in our accommodation, ensuring that everything is freshly cleaned and tidied before each guest arrival, including supplying a welcome box of fresh bread, milk, butter, cheese, eggs and other items to fulfil your initial needs. If, and when, guests have specific needs we are more than happy to accommodate any reasonable request to ensure a perfect stay. The same principle applies to any issues raised during a visit; indeed, had we been given the opportunity to do so, we would have been more than happy to wash floors and steam clean rugs again in response to your request. It is regrettable that you did not advise us of your concerns.
The gite is clearly advertised as rural accommodation and offers beautiful exposed granite stone walls, wooden beams, and stained floorboards. All of these features are apparent in the photographs on both this website and our own. We were surprised that you thought it necessary to bring with you a supply of bubble wrap, but, as we try to accommodate all needs, we had no concerns with your applying this to the walls. This was something you had clearly considered before your arrival.
With regard to your comments concerning the kitchen area, regrettably this photograph was deleted in error but it has now been reinstated, and whilst we agree that this area is compact it provides you with all you would need to prepare a family meal. That said, we are planning to completely re-configure the downstairs area of the gite over the winter period. Photographs will be uploaded as soon as the work has been completed.
As with any rural property you can expect to find flies in the summer months; we spray our properties at the beginning of the season and in between guest arrivals to ensure that you are not inconvenienced over much. However, it is impossible to completely eradicate them.
Whilst we were very understanding of your need to leave early due to a family emergency, we were disappointed at the condition of the gite immediately following your departure. An oversight on our part meant that you had not paid your damages deposit, which, in the event, we would have been unable to return to you due to the high number of breakages of equipment and poor cleanliness.

"Rural retreat between the coasts"

We had a wonderful time staying at this gite. It is set in peaceful Normandy countryside, surrounded by fields, set back from the road with a large garden - great for breakfast outside or evening sundowners. The owners, Anne and Dave, made us feel really welcome and made sure that we had everything that we needed. The living room was light and spacious, decorated tastefully with those touches that make you feel relaxed; good cooking area and barbecue. Bedrooms had plenty of storage space and very good beds - slept so well. Large bathroom with plenty of hot water. Great value for money.
10min drive is the village of Hambye, providing two boulangerie for crossants and baguettes, a boucherie and small supermarche.
We enjoyed several trips to the D-day beaches with their fantastic museums, learning so much of interest. Then there is the Bayeux tapestry - wonderful account of another Norman invasion, but in the opposite direction; there are interesting parallels. In contrast the coast near Mont Saint Michel provided lovely walks, watching the harvesting of mussels (which provide an excellent lunch!) and sand yatching - you can have a go for a small charge. Both coasts are about an hour's drive.
We will definitely be back!
