Key Info

  • Great for children of all ages
  • Car essential

Hawthorn cottage is on Scotchcoulthard Farm which is situated four miles north of Hadrian's Wall in The Northumberland National Park at its most spectacular part. It is halfway between Carlisle and Hexham on the edge of Wark Forest which leads into Kielder Forest. It is necessary to cross the wall to reach Scotchcoulthard and the sites of Housesteads, Vindolanda and The Roman Army Museum are only a short distance away.

Hawthorn is a three bed-roomed cottage that sleeps sevon people. As you enter the door there is a pine staircase ahead with the living room and kitchen on either side. Two bedrooms are on either side upstairs and the third room is accessed through one of these. The living room has two comfortable leather couches round an open fire for those cosy evenings in. There is a digital television, DVD player, CD player and i-pod player.

The kitchen has a table seating 6 and an old Victorian dresser in pine. The floor is covered with terracotta tiles. There is a dishwasher and washing machine with powder provided. There is a four ring gas cooker and a microwave.

All the bedrooms have original pine beams and reach right up into the apex. All the rooms are en-suite with the two main rooms having beds that can be single or super king.

All bathrooms have a bath with shower over, toilet and sink.

Although remote, Scotchcoulthard is not isolated. It is possible to be parked in The Metro Centre, Newcastle, Carlisle, The Lake District or Scotland within the hour.

There are four cottages in total and this cosy cottage is ideal as a romantic getaway cottage or for a family holiday.

The farm is set within 180 acres and is surrounded by splendid scenery with magnificent views and not another inhabited dwelling in sight. We welcome dogs and our own will welcome you. We don't charge extra for dogs and there is no restriction on number.

Children are welcome to help feed the pigs, sheep, hens (and collect eggs) and Turner, the horse. We have our own produce for sale.

For the adventurous child there are stream beds to walk and play in, woods to make camps in and space to bring a tent and camp out. There is storage for bikes and we are just off the Pennine Cycle route through Kielder Forest.

Northern England region

Scotchcoulthard Farm is situated 4 miles north of Hadrian's Wall at its most spectacular point. The farm is on the edge of Wark Forest which leads into Kielder Forest (an ideal trip in a 4x4). The museums of Vindolanda, Housesteads and The Roman Army Museum are a 20 minute drive away. Further afield there is a Go-Ape and then once in Newcastle all the the city life. Durham is a lovely old city to visit and Beamish Museum is not far from there.

Going north-east are the wonderful sandy, quiet Northumberland beaches, Bamburgh and Alnwick castle and the fabulous Alnwick Gardens.

A short drive to the west and you are in Cumbria and The Lake District with all its attractions.
