The Northern England / Northumberland region
The northerly county of Northumberland is a hidden gem of totally unspoilt countryside and wonderful long stretches of pristine sandy beaches. If you want to stretch your legs and breathe in clean country air this is the place for you, with miles of wide open spaces and magnificent views. The county has three distinct sub regions; a coastline stretching some forty miles with quiet sandy beaches and pretty coastal harbour villages. Inland visitors will find dramatic rolling moorland and forests, much of which is National Park and to the south of the region is the famous Hadrian's Wall which runs coast to coast and is now a World Heritage Site. Apart from Northumberland's natural assets the county is steeped in history and has had a turbulent past which is characterised by more than its fair share of castles and ancient hill forts, some of which were built to repel Viking invaders. It was also the scene of the border wars and conflicts between the English and Scots in the 14th-16th century.
The Haltwhistle area
Quietly nestled within the Glendale Estate, Glendale Cottage is perfectly positioned for exploring the very best of Hadrian's wall county. Situated between the famous Walltown Crags and Cawfields, it comes as no surprise that there are a number of excellent walking and cycling opportunities for walkers and cyclists in the area, making it a must visit for outdoor adventure enthusiasts. The popular market town of Haltwhistle is also nearby, offering a number of amenities for the visitor, from pubs to shops, restaurants and a leisure centre, all surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside in the region. Claiming to be the centre of England, Haltwhistle is an ideal place to visit for a spot of rest, relaxation and exploration!

My husband and i are just travelling back after having spent a perfect weekend at Glendale Cottage. We booked the cottage on a whim after deciding we needed a break from life in the fast lane. We couldn't get there until late so informed Julie the owner who told us not to worry anytime would be ok. On arrival she showed us the "quirky" cottage which was spacious clean and homely. It was however pitch black outside. There is no light polution therefore the stars were out in abundance. Julie had deliberately closed the curtains so we could appreciate the surroundings the next morning. We were up bright and early the next day to watch the sun come up and wow what a view. As I run round the cottage opening the curtains the views were supurb. Autumn colours across the fields to the front of the cottage; Hadrians wall on the other side and not to disappoint there were CHICKENS on the court yard! Sainsburys and the Co op are kess than a mile away but we decided to go into Haltwhistle for a cooked breakfast and ended up at the Pillar Box Cafe. It was lovely. From there we went driving round the fantastic roads. We found snow and had tea and cake in the summit cafe; Had lovely meals in the Millcastle Pub and Black Bull where we met lovely characters in the old style locals. Back to the cottage. Because we were on holiday my husband HAD to try out the pool. I thought it sounded a little expensive at 12 pound per hour but I can honestly say it was the best money spent all weekend. We had the underwater pool lights on and soft music. There were no iPods/pads/touches/phones; just the two if us communicating!! Although there were dolphins and floats that the kids would have loved and I must confess we did try the dolphins, albeit unsuccessfully. We then went back to the cottage which was only 10 yards away and did something we've never done before... we played scrabble!!! If your looking for an idyllic getaway where you can wind down then this is just perfect. I'd also like to thank Julie and Phillip; we are of no relation and have never met before but they were so accommodating and friendly and we had quite a giggle with them too. We will definitely be back but think it will be with the kids next time. We might even take my elderly father as he would love it and the cottage would be suitable for his disabilities. Fab weekend. Just what we needed. Now back to city life :( |
