Further details indoors

The living room/ kitchen is well equipped with Sky Freeview TV, DVD, radio and CD player and comfortable sofas. The cottage is centrally heated with thermostatic control which makes the cottage cosy on a cold day but you can supplement this by lighting the wood burning stove with a plentiful supply of logs. The French window opens onto a small patio and has beautiful views over the local Golf course (right on the doorstep!) to the hills of Northumberland and the Scottish Borders. The kitchen area has a gas cooker, fridge, microwave and plenty of crockery and cooking utensils.

The two bedrooms, one a large double bedroom with a king size bed and the other a twin bedded room, both with lovely pine furniture, quality bed linen and accessories.

The shower room has a large shower cubicle, wash basin and WC and a heated towel rail, but no bath.

Further details outdoors

Your own parking space outside the front of the cottage. The patio at the rear has table and chairs and a barbecue if required for those summer evenings with a glass of wine. Watch our many "feathered friends" who visit the bird table - wood pecker, nuthatch, finches and many more.

Northern England region

England's secret county - Northumberland. Hadrian's Wall traverses from east to west, from the east coast at Wallsend to the Solway in Cumbria.

Our county has miles of unspoilt countryside and coast line.

Haltwhistle

Haltwhistle is a small market town in the central area of Hadrian's Wall country, and provides all the services such as supermarkets, banks, post office, railway station and Tourist information. The village of Greenhead is 3 miles west of here and although there is no local shop there, we do have an excellent pub The Greenhead Hotel, a tea room and Youth Hostel.

The main sites along Hadrian's Wall are only a few miles away, The Roman Army Museum is close to the village about 5 minutes in the car, Vindolanda about 7 miles away and Birdoswald 5 miles.

"'Just right' - comfort, facilities and location."

Stanegate Cottage. All you really need to know is in the brochure.
A stay at Stanegate Cottage was recommended by family, when we said we were looking for somewhere for a winter break.
When we arrived for our stay we were greeted by Mr Potts who let us into the cottage and showed us round. Mr Potts gave us all the information we needed for our stay, including how to manage the wood burning stove. The cottage fulfilled our needs for homely comfort. The spacious double bedroom had a comfy bed, enough storage space and a place for luggage.
The kitchen is well equipped with all the things you would have at home and the wood burning stove was a real treat.
We requested an alteration to the timing for the central heating and this was done readily and without fuss.
Stanegate Cottage is in an ideal location for viewing, walking and exploring Hadrians Wall and the main Roman Fort remains, it is also quite near to Kielder forest.
The cottage has lots of books for the avid reader to choose from and also lots of information on the local area, detailed walks and local maps. There is a wealth of tourist information leaflets should you be at a loss for somewhere to go or something to do.

"Super cosy base for sightseeing in the North East!"

The converted cow byre has been renovated extremely well. The bedrooms are spacious and beds comfortable. The shower is powerful and housed within a large cubicle making showering a pleasure. The kitchen is very well stocked, pots pans, dishes knives etc, a rarity not to have missed anything to cook dinner. It's the first time that I have not had to curse about poor quality or absent kitchen utensils. The welcome pack was most unexpected and well received. The owners are very friendly and even though they went away themselves whilst we holidayed, they ensured we could contact them should we encounter any problems, we didn't!

The location is peaceful with lovely views. There is a local pub at the bottom of the hill which serves food all day. The owners have even thought about the need for a torch for the journey back up the hill in the dark!

"Excellent Cottage"

Excellent fully equipped cottage just a 5 minute walk to a pub/restaurant serving good meals at a reasonable price.
The owners welcome was outstanding. Not only was the property immaculate but also provided was a pint of milk, jar of coffee, bottle of wine, box of chocolates, some fruit and handmade shortbread biscuits.
Ideally located for walking along Hadrians Wall and the cottage was well stocked with leaflets and books giving information on what to do in the area.
Woodburning stove together with unlimited logs were provided in case it turned chilly in the evenings.
Outside patio with table and chairs was next to the 11th fairway of the local golf club although we only saw players on the Sunday we were there. Also on the patio was a bird table with containers full of bird food and it was great watching and identifying the birds (there was a book provided to assist) and we did see the resident woodpecker.
This is a first class property and was confirmed when we read through the visitors comments book. We certainly recommend it.

"Comfortable and close"

Describe the service you experienced:
First rate. Shelagh was prompt with all of our correspondence and very helpful with all of our questions. We booked well in advance, almost a year, and she was m

Tell us how you liked the property:
Very quiet, comfortable and relaxing. Wildlife was abundant and the outside garden area allowed my two boys the opportunity to run about.

Talk about the location & amenities
Location was excellent for all of the Hadrian's wall stuff that we wanted to visit. It is close to the main A69 Carlisle - Newcastle Road so travel connections are excellent, yet you can't hear the road as you are protected by the owner's residence in front of you. There is a golf course right behind you if that is your thing and there is a nice pub in the hotel just at the bottom of the hill in Greenhead. Washer inside for dirty hiking/walking clothes, large kitchen and comfortable couches are perfect to unwind on after a busy day.

Say what you liked best & least
Large master bedroom, very comfortable single beds (x2), large shower, quick internet connection (from the master bedroom, very slow from kitchen????)

"Perfect location."

Very comfortable, well appointed and clean. The hosts Shelagh and David are perfect - there if you want them but not interfering. Views are impressive, with a bird table providing for some feathered visitors - a joy. Location is great for all things Hadrian - Vindolanda was our favourite. It was fascinating and informative. Well placed for visits furher afield also. Alnwick Castle is good but perhaps overplaying the Harry Potter connection - the state rooms and chapel are impressive though. Try Bamburgh Castle too if you get the chance - huge edifice in a remarkable location.

"Relaxing"

Northumberland is just a joy...no hectic holiday makers here , just people who want to relax and and enjoy what Northumberland has to offer.
Walking along Hadrians Wall .... the countryside is a joy ....uncrowded, views to die for , pretty villages, and some great local places to eat out.
We found all of this right on the doorstep of Stanegate Cottege....with excellent hospitality from our hosts David and Sheila. Thanks....!

"Superb Stangate cottage"

The service was very good - when we arrived we asked for heating and this was supplied without question. Our hosts were were friendly and helpful but more importantly they didn't interfere with our stay, just left us on our own which is what we wanted but were there if needed. The cottage was very nice and comfortable and we enjoyed our stay very much. We especially enjoyed sitting outside in the evening looking at the great view, and feeding the birds. Couldn't wish for more.

As to the area - we have visited the area once before and enjoyed our stay however, it was good to re visit the roman wall, museum, and sites again.

It was great to be able to return to a comfortable, pleasent cottage every evening.
