The Costa Calida/Murcia region
Costa Cálida is an extensive stretch in the Spanish coastline where the harsh mountain landscape prolongs its stark tranquility to the sea edge.
It's horizon of oleanders, prickly pears and wild dwarf palms, that recalls, on some or other watchtower, the danger of piracy and appears with the same solemn calm as in the times of the adventurous sailors prepared to return with their ships full to the brim.
The cry of the seagulls and the buzzing of the cicada are sometimes the only sounds that break the luminous atmosphere. Yet there is even more cause for curiosity. The contrast between the old fishing towns and the vegetable garden cities, whose characters it owes to both the almost mythic fertility of the fields and great monuments, might easily make you believe that the distance between the two is actually greater. Murcia is a small region. A short journey of 100 Km. between the two most distant points will reveal very different areas. The mines, the vegetable gardens and the mountains, along with the coastline, have been its main features throughout a long history full of events that very well could pass for legends.
The average annual temperature here is 20C, the area has less than 40 days of rain a year and the sea temperature rarely falls below 18C. The Costa Calida is easily accessed by air - foreign visitors fly into Murcia's San Javier airport (10 miles from resort) from all major and regional UK airports. During the long hot summer months, the water temperature of the Mar Menor rises to that of a warm bath so it's the ideal place to master sports such as sailing, windsurfing, water and jet ski-ing (if you're not too rheumatic or arthritic!). The shallow lagoon is a 170 square metre natural water park providing safe bathing for children and an ideal training base for those wanting to learn a water sport
Hacienda Riquelme Golf Resort / Polaris World, Hacienda Riquelme area
In the south of Murcia : At the southern end of the Costa is the popular resort of Mojacar, a beautiful Moorish hilltop town in the province of Almeria. The old town is a delightful cluster of ancient whitewashed buildings served by narrow, winding streets. The beachfront is a 24-hour playground in the summer months with plenty of watersports and leisure activities by day and a lively nightlife consisting of everything from bingo and karaoke to flamenco shows and all-night clubs. The nearby fishing port of Garrucha is famous for its excellent seafood restaurants where you can savour the fresh catch of the day.
The Coastal trip - The Costa Calida begins at El Mojon, an old fishing village with a superb beach. A short distance from El Mojon you will find the Regional Park of Las Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar, the most important wetlands in the region of Murcia. Flocks of pink flamigos rest here each year. The salt works here were exploited by the Romans and are a complex network of pools. from here take the road to San Pedro del Pinatar and visit the Casa del Reloj on the San Sebastian Farm. Two kilometres away is Lo Pagan, a town with the largest area of open-area mud baths in Europe. These mud baths are recommended for all kinds of skin complaints. In addition you will find several tranquil beaches, an early morning fish market and ample night-life.
Mar Menor - The Mar Menor is separated from the Mediterranean by a narrow strip of land only 22km wide, called La Manga del Mar Menor. its sandy beach and clear waters have made it one of the highest regarded resorts on the Mediterranean. The beaches are complimented by a huge range of hotels, casinos, golf courses and everything a holiday-maker could wish for. A few minutes away is Cabo de Palos, a charming seafront village with a unique 19th century lighthouse and two delightful beaches.
Valle del Ricote - Unique corner of Murcia's market garden, with the most outstanding traditional handicraft Playa Honda - one of the nicest beaches on the Mar Menor Lagoon
