For non golfers, there are many beautiful unspoilt beaches, shopping in the ancient city of Murcia.

The Murcia region
There's lots of choices of what to do in the Costa Calida - and even a choice of which Sea to go to! You can choose between the Mediterranean Sea, & the lesser known Mar Menor (little sea). The Med beaches include some fabulous white sand walks that the locals favour, while the Mar Menor is an inland sea/salt water lake separated from the Mediterranean by La Manga (the sleeve) del Mar Menor; otherwise known as the La Manga strip. It is favoured amongst families with small children due to its warm, shallow & salty waters (salt makes you float more easily). The area is all extremely family friendly and there are many little bars and cafes to help the holiday experience!
Some of our favourite local places: Cartagena (there are some idyllic hidden beaches with restaurants for a memorable lunch or two); Playa Honda, where the beaches are quiet, safe and have wonderful sand; San Pedro; San Javier (jump on the boat across the Mar Menor to La Manga for lunch and a swim) and even the beaches at Los Alcazares can be wonderful. Don't be put off by the entrance to the town - keep going to the beach and enjoy the a long lazy promenade on the boardwalk. Try Restaurant La Encarnacion and be sure to have a look at its amazing courtyard.
For golfers: there are plenty of courses nearby to enjoy, if you want to look further afield than Hacienda Riquelme and the other Polaris World courses.
The Hacienda Riquelme Golf Resort / Polaris World, Hacienda Riquelme area
The feature of the development is the Jack Nicklaus designed 18 hole golf course. Hacienda Riquelme is the fourth Polaris golf resort to be completed in the Costa Calida area. It's part of the Nicklaus golf trail and guests can get occasionally get discounted green fees (check at clubhouse for offers and promotions). Recent deals at the Hacienda course have included a two for one offer between mid-day and 5pm or €30 per round for a twilight round after 5pm. There are other discounts available for buggies, club-hire etc and you can also try your hand at other Polaris golf resorts nearby. The courses at El Valle and La Torre (both 15 minutes away) are both excellent and pose different challenges to the Hacienda course. Hacienda Riquelme 2008 is already a happy holiday destination and great for the golfer, but the complex is not yet fully complete. So you have a centre with many of the facilities already in place (such as the fabulous swimming pools, the children's' play areas, the hugely impressive golf course, clubhouse bar and mini-supermarket) but with pleasantly few people there to use them. You also have access to the full facilities on nearby Polaris resorts like La Torre, which is about 15 minutes away. There are regular (free) shuttle buses between Hacienda and the other Polaris resorts. Although you can have a lovely holiday on-site at Hacienda, we'd recommend getting a little adventurous and making the short drive to the wonderful beaches and resorts. Sports facilities at Hacienda are a little way off being finished - we'll update the site when the tennis, fitness centre, volleyball, basketball courts etc are finished.
When it comes to enjoying days off the resort, some of our favourite local places: Cartagena (there are some idyllic hidden beaches with restaurants for a memorable lunch or two); Playa Honda, where the beaches are quiet, safe and have wonderful sand; San Pedro; San Javier (jump on the boat across the Mar Menor to La Manga for lunch and a swim) and even the beaches at Los Alcazares can be wonderful. Don't be put off by the entrance to the town - keep going to the beach and enjoy the a long lazy promenade on the boardwalk. Try Restaurant La Encarnacion and be sure to have a look at its amazing courtyard.
Also make sure you visit Murcia at least once. Parking in the centre is remarkably easy (just head for the city centre and look for the P signs, they are mostly underground and all over the place). You must have a wander around the walls of the spectacular cathedral and while you are there, if you're after a spot of shopping, remember the Spanish shops generally close from 1.30pm to 5pm, giving you a chance to dive in to some wonderful tapas restaurants (you may notice a theme developing here!). Try Bar Los Zagales if you can find it (C/Polo de Medina, 4 (junto Catedral) or Lizarran, Polo de Medina 5, just around the corner from the cathedral. Wonderful.
Back to the beach and you'll find diving on the Hormigas Islands, near Cabo de Palos - probably one of the best dive sites in Spain. Although the golf is active enough for most of our guest, we're still finding out about other activities as we're told you can find climbing, horse-riding and canoeing locally.

Fly to Murcia/San Javier International Airport from Belfast, Birmingham, Blackpool, Bristol, Edinburgh, Exeter, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London - Gatwick, London - Luton, London - Stansted, Manchester, Newcastle, Norwich, Nottingham/East MidlandsNottingham / East Midlands and Southampton. Airlines flying there include Ryanair, Jet2, Easyjet and Monarch.
Car hire can be done at the airport, but it's better to pre-book and try to do that with companies that have the cars at the airport. With some firms you have to take a short bus journey to collect your car. Dickmanns is usually good value and they have an office in Los Alcazares which makes life easier if you have a problem. http://www.dickmannsrentacar.com/ We also now like SolMar car hire, which is easy to find at the airport, has a good fleet of cars and is very reasonable. http://www.solmar.es/carhire/murcia_airport_car_hire.shtml

Great apartment with lovely furnishings and great views from the balcony from which you could view the wonderful sunsets over a glass of wine. The air conditioning in the bedrooms was a real treat as you could sleep despite the warm nights. Really enjoyed our stay it was the perfect chill out holiday, the area was peaceful and the huge swimming pool was often empty. Would strongly suggest the hiring of a car as the nearest beach was several minutes drive away so unless you don't mind staying on site a car is a must. |

The brief was a weekend with two mates to escape the UK and play golf in the sun. Heard of Dave and Jenny's apartment through friends and it worked out beautifully - flight to Murcia, cheap car... more |

The apartment was first class. Having balconies front and back meant that you could take advantage of sun, or shade whenever it suited you. It was spacious and well equipped inside and out. Most importantly the beds were comfortable. We spent lots of time sitting on the balcony with a glass of wine, or three, watching the sun go down! The whole view from the balcony was tremendous and completely unobscured. We visited many places during our two week holiday, including Murcia and Cartegena. Cartegena was particularly interesting with a lot of Roman era history. Los Alcazares and Cabo Roig were enjoyable visits. You can go into the 'amazing courtyard' at L'Encarnacion in Los Alcazares where they had a 'happy hour' when we were there. It really is well worth a visit as Jenny says, "its like stepping back in time to the Noel Coward era". We enjoyed eating at Em's and also the Taj Indian Restaurant in Sucina - the patisserie in the square is also worth a visit. We enjoyed all the other restaurants mentioned in your recommendations, in particular Rebate. If you go to Lilly's you most definitely need an empty stomach, but it was most enjoyable. We also walked to the Hacienda and ate in the restaurant there which we enjoyed very much. We also cooked in the apartment a couple of times which we found to be quite easy. Ahh - wish we were back!! |
