The Murcia region

The Murcia Region is located to the east of Andalucia in the sout-east of Spain close to the Mediterranean coast. Its warm, mild temperatures (with an annual average of 21 C) and low rainfall makes it an ideal holiday destination in any season. It enjoys over 300 days of sunshine a year with mild winters and spring and autumn being seasons when one can play golf or explore the local countryside.

Unlike some other areas of Spain, it retains much of its Spanish character and, for example, Murcia city offers glimpses of original Spanish culture, including a cathedral with year-round exhibitions, wonderful shops and tapas bars, and even a casino.

The Mar Menor, which has over 44km of beaches with protected bays and coves, is separated from the Mediterranean by a strip of sand 22km long, which forms a barrier creating a shallow, warm lagoon. The Mar Menor’s waters warm up early in the year and stay at a fairly consistent temperature throughout the season.

There are national parks, such as Espuna, in the vicinity offering many opportunities for hiking and mountain biking.

Hacienda Riquelme Golf Resort

The apartment is situated in an ideal holiday location, which enjoys over 300 days of sunshine every year with beautiful hot summers and mild winters. There is so much to see and do; here is just a small selection:

Murcia (30 minutes) – a very Spanish city set on the river with a magnificent cathedral, several museums, squares, a pedestrian old quarter lined with shops, department stores and a great selection of places to eat and drink. Murcia also hosts Terra Natura a lovely zoo/safari park and adjoining water park, Aqua Natura, the first water park in Murcia is 30,000m2 and is split into three different areas:

(1) One with slides (10 slides which includes the Kamikaze ride)

(2) The "lazy river" where you can relax and let the water take you along. This area includes a solarium where you can rent sunbeds.

(3) The swimming pool has a separate children's pool.

Cartegena (40 minutes) – New Carthage that was in Roman times There is an attractive seafront area lined with bars and restaurants, many ancient remains including an amphitheatre and a fascinating city with lovely old buildings. There is a branch of El Corte Ingles here (as there is in Murcia) – a fantastic department store.

Orihuela (45 minutes) – a very old Spanish town on a river with a lovely old quarter and cathedral. Again places to eat and drink!

Mar Menor: about 20 minutes away by car, many low-key resorts on this sheltered stretch of water – ideal for children. There are many beaches including Pilar de Horadada, Los Alcazares and San Pedro which all have glorious sand on the edge of the Mar Menor which is a tideless lagoon with clear blue warm waters separated from the Mediterranean by the La Manga ‘Strip’ making it safe for children and great for all water sports including wind-surfing and sailing. Boat trips operate out to the islands in the Mar Menor and there is a ferry to La Manga. Again many places to eat and drink. There is an excellent Tapas bar in Los Alcazares – La Tropical.

Calblanque (40 minutes) – a nature reserve on the coast on the way to La Manga – a wonderful place to swim, sunbathe and take a picnic – no facilities here! You can also see lovely flowers and birds at the right time of the year. You may even see a wild tortoise!

San Pedro Del Pinatar - There is a nature reserve on the salt flats that is one of the prime areas of ecological importance in Murcia and the famous mud baths in the salt flat area are said to heal skin complaints and rheumatism. Migratory flamingos make their way to Africa via this spot each September making this an excellent location for watching a variety of migratory birds.

Espuna (1 hour) – a National Park south-west of Murcia off the main route towards Granada/Almeria. This is a great area for walking and picnicking.

"Superb Holiday"

We have just returned from 2 weeks in this beautiful location and apartment and after taking holidays in this part of Spain for the last 10 years this is now our favorite place to stay. From the moment we arrived at the apartment we knew this was a bit special, everything was immaculate and clean and the small touches of the towels and sweets on the bed made all the difference. The property is very well equipped as per the description and is situated in a perfect location next to a fantastic pool which never got too busy. The resort itself is an oasis with neat and pretty grounds patrolled and tended by very friendly staff. From booking all the way to being on Holiday Steve the property owner has kept in touch and has been a pleasure to deal with, we would recommend anyone to stay here, we most certainly will be back for more!

"Lovely apartment in a great resort"

This is a very well-situated apartment that is next to one of the biggest swimming pools on the complex. It was very clean and well-equipped - the photos give a perfect idea of what it is like. It has a very private front patio and garden too. The resort itself is great, being well-maintained (with its own security team) and lots of different pools and children's parks.
