The Koh Phangan region
Koh Phangan used to be known as a backpackers destination. The Island's reputation for holding the famous "Full Moon Party" had many visitors coming to the island for the sole purpose of "partying". Of course, the "Full Moon Party" still attracts many people to "Haad Rin". However more recently, the island, in particular the North West coast, has grown in popularity amongst families and couples. Seeking a little more "luxury" from their vacation.
The North West coast has a very slow pace of life and traditional feel to it. "Haad Salad" and "Chaloklum" both share a tranquil atmosphere. These places, amongst many others are easily accessible by Jeep from "Talay Tong Village" , making your stay at the resort extremely relaxing.
The Thailand Government has made it quite clear that they intend to keep the island preserved and unspoilt. They welcome people to Koh Phangan who appreciate its natural beauty.
Talay Tong Village has been built sympathetically to it's surroundings. The architect and builder have worked closely together in order to "blend" with the surrounding jungle terrain. The wildlife has been considered, as we have kept as many of the existing trees and landscape features as possible.
The Bronze Drum of Dongson Culture (500BC - 100BC) that was found on Ko Samui in 1977 is evidence that there were settlements of people on Ko Samui, Ko Pha Ngan, and their islets from more than two thousand years ago. Some historians and archaeologists believe that the first group who migrated to Ko Pha Ngan were the Muslim sea Gypsies (Pygmy, Semung, and Proto-Malay) who travelled by boat from the Malay Peninsula.
However, nowadays there are few Muslims who live on the island. The name of Ko Pha Ngan comes from the word 'Ngan', the southern dialect meaning 'sand bar', for there are many sand bars offshore around the island. Ko Pha Ngan has been a long time favorite of past kings of Thailand. Specifically Rama V, or Chulalongkorn visited Ko Pha Ngan 14 times during his reign.
The North West coast of Koh Phangan has an interesting stretch of coral reef. Boasting more reefs than anywhere else on the island. The Westery facing beach aspects make it extremely suitable for diving and snorkelling enthusiasts.
At the point where Ao Wok Tum meets Laem Srithanu, the coral reef starts nearer the beach. The wide sand flats that dominate the coast further South become narrower; this makes swimming conditions improve dramatically and the coral rich area becomes a haven for all kinds of wonderful marine life.
There are several waterfalls in the region and it is easily possible to beach hop up the coast by foot if you want to explore the area, whilst at the southern end of Haad Chao Phao, Laem Son Lake is a great place to swim in freshwater under the backdrop of the cool shady pines.
Due to the North-West's longstanding popularity, there is some great seafood restaurants. There are also several establishments serving top quality European food in the region as well as plenty of nightlife, with several great beach bars/clubs.
