The Cornwall region
The Newquay coast: from the Hayle estuary near St Ives and Gwithian Towans to the Trevose peninsula stretch, almost continuously, superb sand/surf beaches. Newquay – on the railway and with airport (flights from London and a number of regional airports and flights to the Scilly Isles) – is the surfing capital, full of amusements, arcades, young people, pubs and 'life', short on some other things, but pretty harbour and what beaches (Fistral, Tolcarne)! Watergate Bay (just up the coast road from Newquay), home to the Extreme Academy, is the place to go if you're feeling adventurous - try surfing, kitesurfing, waveskiing or stand-up paddleboarding. If you're not an adrenaline junkie, it's also a good spot for the gourmet; Jamie Oliver has opened a restaurant, 'Fifteen', there. St Agnes, a little ex-tin-mining town, has preserved itself remarkably (small proper shops) and attractively. Bedruthan Steps (cliff-high rocks tower out of the beach) is one of the great coast sights (and low-tide walks). Easy drive to The Eden Project (see South Cornwall).
Gwithian Towans: magnificent, nearly 4-mile-long sand/surf/windsurfing beach backed by dunes and low cliffs, and a settlement of mostly wooden bungalows with seasonal shop/store/café (good meals, surf hire). Gentle access to beach. Gwithian village (pub), 1 road mile or 15 minutes by footpath. Hayle (small town), 2½ miles; St Ives, 7; Penzance, 9½.
