The Brittany region
Guémené-sur-Scorff is a picturesque village with cobbled streets, quaint houses and a ruined chateau which was once the seat of the Dukes of Rohan. It is situated in an ideal location at the heart of Brittany, less than 2 hours from its superb, historic capital Rennes and less than 30 minutes from the sea. The picturesque town is well-furnished with bars and restaurants, and even a cinema. The surrounding area provides fantastic countryside for ramblers as well as amble opportunity for fishing, plus a nearby lake for windsurfing and kayaking (Lac du Bel Air). For children you will find pony clubs, petting zoos and mazes only a short drive away. The nearby Parc Pourleth offers zip lining, quad biking and other outdoor pursuits.
Guémené-sur-Scorff itself is home to the remains of a medieval bath-house, a traditional pottery studio, a bat-house, and traditional makers of the ‘andouille’ – a type of spicy sausage. You will also find ‘Les Trois Marchands’, one of the oldest restaurants in Brittany (founded in 1648) as well as a traditional crêperie and a pizzeria. Nearby Gourin is home to the 18th-Century Château de Tronjoly.
Climate: In summer, temperatures can often reach 30 degrees, but is rarely less than pleasantly warm, making it the perfect holiday destination for families.
Guemene sur Scorff
On the nearby coast you will find the resort of Carnac, home to the largest collection of prehistoric standing stones in the world (larger than Stonehenge), as well as a superb beach with sailing facilities and a health spa. The coastline is also renowned for its oysters!
Annual festivals in the area include a festival for the local type of sausage, the ‘andouille’ at Guémené-sur-Scorff itself (August), a crêpe festival at nearby Gourin (July) and a Breton folk music championship, also at Gourin. Guémené-sur-Scorff also hosts an annual Fest-Noz (a traditional Breton festival of music and dance) in September.
The surrounding area also hosts a number of festivals throughout the year, including:
• Festival Interceltique de Lorient (August): a celebration of Celtic music, art and culture from all over
the world, in the form or parades, performances, craft markets etc.
• Les Filets Bleus (August): a festival of fishing traditions in Concarneau
• Art Rock (May): a pop, rock and electro music festival in Saint-Brieuc
• Vielles Charrues (July): the largest music festival in France, which has in recent years attracted
acts such as Snoop Dogg, Kaiser Chiefs, David Guetta, M.I.A., Jack Johnson, The Chemical
Brothers, Muse, Mika, Jamiroquoi, Bruce Springsteen and The Killers.
• Festival du film britannique (October): previews of new British cinema at Dinard.
