The Andalucia region

Güejar Sierra is a small mountain town perched in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, which preserves the traditional mountain architecture of the region at its heart. It is skirted by the crystal clear waters of the River Genil and perched in a dramatic position on the slopes of the Cerro del Calar - with panoramic views of the rugged mountains just at the point where they dip their toes into the beautiful Canales reservoir. Guejar is the departure point for the main footpaths of medium and high mountain ascent into the Sierra Nevada, such as the world famous Vereda de la Estrella (Path of the Star). The surroundings offer the visitor great natural beauty; chestnut forests; old quarries of green jasper and the historic remains of an old tramway which used to wind its way up the Sierra Nevada from Granada. Two of the attractive old stone tram stops in Maitena and El Charcon have been converted in to lovely restaurants on the banks of the Genil, where the fresh waters are great for a cool off in summer time. The Canales reservoir also offers a variety of water based activities.

Güejar has a good choice of interesting tapas bars and great restaurants both within the town itself and in the surrounding area. Many of the restaurants have summer terraces where you can eat and enjoy breathtaking views at the same time and some also have summer pools. Or if you want to visit the beach during your stay, the Costa Tropical is just 45 minutes away.

Guejar Sierra

Casa San Tomas is a perfect base for exploring the beautiful Sierra Nevada National Park and also the stunning city of Granada. Güejar is just a 20 minute drive from Pradollano - the Sierra Nevada ski resort. The resort is also known as "Sol y Nieve" (Sun and Snow) and historically enjoys great Spring snow conditions. While skiing is great in the Sierra Nevada and the views of Africa from the top are spectacular, the resort itself was built relatively recently. Staying in Güejar offers the unique opportunity to sample the skiing of the Sierra Nevada while at the same time enjoying the experience of living in a traditional Spanish village. It is also a great centre for mountain sports, family and adventure activities. There is freshwater fishing on the lake, less than 5 minutes from the house. This is an ideal base for mountain biking, walks of all levels, ice/rock climbing, canoeing, rafting, paragliding, horse-riding etc. There is also a nearby water parks in Cenes de la Vega on the road to Granada.

However, no trip to the area would be complete without a visit to the spectacular Alhambra Palace and the historic architecture of Granada itself. The city can be reached inside 15 minutes whilst the Alhambra is just 20 minutes away. If you don't fancy driving, Guejar is served by a remarkably regular and inexpensive bus service.

A mere 15 minutes drive to the city centre (or take the bus leaving every 40 minutes) giving you the benefits of being close enough to explore the fabulous Alhambra and the old quarter of the Albaycin, whilst at the same time allowing you to escape the heat and retreat to the calm and tranquility of beautiful Guejar.

"Great holiday location!"

Casa San Tomas is the perfect place to stay for a trip to the Granada area, with lots to see and do. The house is beautiful, well equipped and has amazing views. Easy access to mountains, the cultural… More

Many thanks for your kind words. It sounds like you had an action packed week! It is true that the house is perfectly located, within easy reach of Granada, the coast and the ski resort. The ski season is long, starting in December and running through to the end of April. It is possible to ski in the morning and be on the beach by late afternoon! The views when there is snow on the mountains are spectacular! We hope to see you again very soon. Matt and Mel.

Many thanks for your kind comments. High standards in both comfort and cleanliness are very important to us. We are glad you found the house to be equipped with everything you needed. You are absolutely right, you can enjoy the generous tapas in the bars and restaurants and never need to actually buy an evening meal! Glad you managed to enjoy the cycling and we hope to welcome you back again soon so you can enjoy the views with snow on the mountains. Matt and Mel.

"Excellent Townhouse"

We had a great stay at Casa San Tomas. This newly-renovated townhouse is spacious, with comfortable beds, a good sofa and powerful shower. It's about 5 minutes walk to the town (the uphill walk takes a bit longer on the way back) and there was plenty of useful information provided by the owners and the lady who gave us the keys, all of which certainly made our stay more enjoyable.

The town itself is also great: a well-located base to explore the region, authentically Spanish with very few tourists and lots of places for a drink and tapas.

The only slight downer was the lack of wifi, although many of the town's bars and restaurants will let you log on to their networks when you're out.

Many thanks for choosing Casa San Tomas for your holiday. Guejar Sierra is the prefect place to experience the 'real Spain', the lack of tourism is part of it's charm. The location of the house means that the many bars and restaurants are only a short walk away. We are pleased that you found the house to be comfortable and well equipped. We purposely do not have WIFI as there are many bars and restaurants where this can be found and guest feedback suggests that the feeling of 'being away from it all' without the distractions of emails and internet is actually quite nice. We hope to welcome you back again in the future. Mel and Matt.

Many thanks for your kind words. We were delighted to welcome you back for your 20th Wedding Anniversary and are glad you enjoyed the Champagne and chocolates. We are always happy to help out with any requests for special occasion extras where we can! Your comments about the ski resort are spot on. Prices are much cheaper than in the resorts in the Alps and the queues for the lifts are generally much shorter. From the beginning of March we will indeed have a hot tub at the house and we hope to welcome you back again soon. Matt and Mel.

Many thanks for your kind words. We are delighted that you had such a great weekend. Guejar is indeed a typical whitewashed Andalucian village in every way. The lack of tourism is part of the charm. We spend a lot of time researching bars, restaurants and information on the local area and glad you found the guest folder useful. The close proximity to the ski resort makes the village a perfect (and much less expensive) place to stay. We hope to welcome you and your friends back again in the future. Thanks Mel and Matt.

"Absolutely Stunning"

Myself, Girlfriend, baby & 2 of our friends stayed here in December. Gorgeous place & Great location. Only 15 minute drive from Sierra Nevada, Beautiful views. The house was immaculate very cosy & loads we had loads of fun throughout stay Locals were all very friendly. Hoping to stay there again in the near future.

Many thanks for your kind words about our home. The presentation and high standards within the house are very important to us and we are glad you found everything to be immaculate. Yes the close proximity to the ski resort makes Guejar a much more affordable and friendly place to stay. Great bars and restaurants within walking distance of the house, together with much more reasonably priced ski hire are the main reasons why we chose to own a home there. We would of course love to welcome you all back again in the future. Thanks Mel and Matt.
