The Umbria region

Why choose Umbria? Umbria lies at the very heart of Italy. It has some of the most beautiful countryside to be found in Italy, as well as some of the most interesting towns. Often described as ‘mystical’, ‘serene’ and ‘enchanted,’ Umbria maintains a quiet otherworldliness. Umbria is a combination of mountains (53%) and hills (41%) with the balance being the flat terrain in one of the central valleys. Its capital Perugia, is a city of great antiquity with numerous works of art.
Lago Trasimeno, near Maggione is the largest lake on the Italian peninsula, but still retains its’ natural beauty and breathtaking views. Gubbio, Spello, Todi and Spoleto remain among the most attractive and best preserved small medieval towns in Italy. Orevieto, with its magnificent cathedral has a most spectacular position 315m up on a craggy rock overlooking the valley. Assisi is world famous as the birthplace of St Francis.
WHAT TO SEE...

The Gubbio area
Pian Di Cascina is a short distance (1km) up a quiet, white road. You can walk to the two local villages of Casa Castalda and Carbonesca. The area surrounding the farm is stunning open countryside, perfect for walking and cycling. The farmstead is within walking distance of the village of Carbonesca (20 mins) which has 2 bars a small local restaurant (book ahead) and a village shop.
Also within cycling or walking distance (40 mins) is the traditional walled village of Casa Castalda, which has a variety of shops including, a butchers, a fantastic cheese shop, bakers, 2 well stocked mini markets and several bars. There are plenty of good restaurants in the area, the nearest is only a few minutes drive from the farm.
The farmstead is nestled in the hills of Valfabbrica. The wonderful medieval town of Gubbio is only 25 minutes drive away and Assisi is a 15 km picturesque drive from the house. The house is ideally placed for several airports, the nearest, Perugia is 30 minutes away and Ancona airport, is less than 1 hour's drive.
RESTAURANTS
There are many restaurants in the area surrounding Pian Di Cascina and plenty of opportunities to sample the local cooking and produce. There are three traditional Umbrian restaurants within 20 minutes of the house. The local restaurants serve typical Umbrian food such as: 'affettati' -plates of superb ham, salami and cheese, simple rustic pasta dishes with 'sugo' or truffles and roast meats and game.
The medieval town of Gubbio (25 mins drive away) has some of the best restaurants in Umbria and a lively night-life. There is plenty of choice for all budgets and tastes. The speciality is rich truffle dishes made with local black and white truffles. Gubbio also has several bars and pubs, which are great fun and rather lively during the long summer evenings.
The nearby picturesque hill town of Spello has one of the top 18 cantina's (wine tasting cellars) in Italy. You can sample the best of Umbria's wine and produce in a lovely medieval courtyard setting. The tutored tastings are in Italian or English and each course is matched with a local wine.
There are many other fantastic restaurants in the area. When you arrive, we provide a welcome pack with details and directions to the many of the restaurants we recommend. We also suggest places of interest to visit along the way. You could spend weeks enjoying sampling all the local food and wine!
BARS & PUBS
The local towns of Carbonesca and Casa Castalda both have bars, where you can drink into the small hours with the locals. You can walk to both of the bars in Carbonesca (20 mins walk), they are both typical Umbrian bars, with beer on tap and a lively banter.
The local village of Casa Castalda (5 mins drive or 40 mins walk) has three bars in the centre of the town and a pizza-pub on the outskirts of town. The largest of the local bars (in the centre of town) is the hub of local activity, serves a variety of beers and aperitifs and is busy day and night.
Gubbio, 25 minutes drive away, has a lively night-life. There are 5 pubs with English and Italian beers on tap and many bars. In the summer Gubbio is alive into the small hours. The balmy nights encourage late opening and much fun is to be had by all!

Don't just take our word for it...
The Bobb Family: Date of Stay: June 2008
From the moment we arrived and watched the kids run down to the pool from our terrace with the Appenine mountains in the background I knew we'd picked the right place in Pian Di Cascina. The pool became a main feature of our stay, lovely and large for the kids but with nice shade for the adults. The apartment was spotlessly clean and well equipped, a cool haven away from the hot part in the middle of the day.Paul & Isabel's local knowledge and fluent Italian helped us plan our stay which included a midblowing 7 course dinner at a local Agriturismo, plus of course local marinated meats which we happily cooked on the barbecues that came with the apartment, washed down with local wines available at a very reasonable cost.
Nothing was too much trouble and the guidebook Paul & Isabel put together would be enough to keep anyone happy. Local restaurants have all been visited and recommended so all those details that can cause concern on holiday were taken care of. Our week was over far too quickly and we're already planning our next visit, hopefully for longer this time. We've so often been disappointed when places don't live up to the pictures and descriptions but Pian Di Cascina isn't one of them, a truly lovely location.
Mark, Irena, Sophie and Isabel Riggott from Clevedon, Bristol May 2008
We had a lovely stay at Pian di Cascina, a truly beautiful spot, stunning views and
a great location for touring. The accommodation was top quality and the facilities excellent. Our girls particularly enjoyed the extensive play area and roaming freely in the delightful grounds. What really made our stay outstanding was your excellent but unobtrusive service, nothing was too much trouble and you
really went the extra mile to ensure we had a great holiday. We definitely hope to visit again soon.
5/5 Fantastic accommodation and beautiful surroundings

Date of Stay: September 2008
We stayed at Pian di Cascina in September this year and can't wait to go back! The standard of the accommodation and facilities were excellent - large rooms, fully-equipped kitchen, high-spec bathrooms and each apartment has it's own private outside area with a bbq. They seemed to have thought of everything and were v happy to try to accommodate any additional requests. The location of the property is amazing, with breathtaking views of the mountains and surrounding countryside. Nearby there are loads of places to visit and things to do - pretty medieval towns, lakes, caves, cycling, walking and of course, relaxing by the pool! I would highly recommend staying in this property.

Date of Stay: April 2007
I loved being away from the hustle and bustle of the big city and having the ability to lay back and relax in the warm sun and look at the beautiful landscapes. I enjoyed having the option to visit numerous historical towns, driving distance away from the property. The owners/staff were very helpful and accommodating of all my needs and requests. The apartment style room was sized generously, was very clean, and was newly furnished. It was excellent for storing food and drinks and it had a friendly family feel to it. The villa also offers wonderfully cooked meals for staying in or there are numerous choices of wonderful Italian restaurants to go to as well. I would highly recommend this property for a week or two getaway for relaxation and sightseeing.

Date of Stay: August 2008
I wish I could have stayed there longer, the beauty of the place, the things to see and to explore around there are much more than what I had expected. We cycled around the areas, where some steep hills challenged us but rewarded us with magnificent panoramas at the top. It is a perfect holiday to combine some sport, some sightseeing and getting a tan!

Date of Stay: October 2008
Pian Di Cascina "farm turned luxury villa" is the perfect place to get away from the hum of traffic & to glory in the beauty of Umbria. The accommodation itself is lovely, well-kept, & comfortable, not to mention affordable. The proprietors are friendly & helpful, plus they can create evening meals that are to die for. Our stay was from the middle of October through the first week of November so swimming was out, but hiking was terrific in shirt-sleeve weather. Also, we were fortunate to be there when the olives were being picked on the property & pressed locally. The first pressing of olive oil on Italian bread is a fabulous treat. In addition Perugia was host to the Euro Chocolate Fest & Gubbio & Citta Di Castello (both quite nearby) were hosting truffle fests then. We'd go back in a nanno-second. BTW there is beer on tap (birra a la spina) at Bar Castalda in Casa Castalda just 2 miles down the hill. Thanks, Paul & Isabel as well as Benjamin & Ollie for a great vacation stay. Cheers, Steve, Carol, Peter, Judy, Jim & Becky

5/5 Pian di Cascina Umbrian Paradise
John & Maura London.
Date of Stay: October 2008
We would like to thank the both of you for a wonderful holiday. It had been such a difficult year for us in many ways and we needed to go somewhere that we could unwind and get away from the hurly burly - Pian di Cascina was just the job.
We are regulars to Tuscany so we were so surprised how wonderful Umbria was, less pretentious and in may ways more beautiful.
Pian di Cascina provides everything you need and much more. The standard of the accommodation was fantastic and probably the best place we have ever stayed in Italy.
Well done to you both and thank you for an amazing holiday. We will be booking again for next year.
Best wishes
Maura & John

Date of Stay: May 2008
Wonderful holiday in excellent self catering accommodation set in the most beautiful countryside. Great walking (if you are fit) and fantastic place to relax and enjoy good local food. Car essential but within easy driving of Assisi and Gubbio. Good for couples or families. Swimming pool very cold early in the year but still a great place to relax around on the loungers. Good play area for young children. Gas BBQ supplied and kitchen well equipped for cooking inside and out. High quality linen supplied and accommodation spotlessly clean. The residential English owners provided very good customer service and a comprehensive folder packed with info on walks, restaurants and local shops etc. Have already recommended Pian Di Cascina to serveral friends.

5/5 Holiday May 2007 in La Cantina
Michael P Hampshire.
Date of Stay: May 2007
We stayed in the Cantina, the old wine cellar and were very comfortable. We loved the views from our veranda over the Umbrian hills and enjoyed a barbecue a couple of evenings (with the enormous pieces of steak bought from the local butchers!). We had our 18 month baby with us, and he was quite happy sharing the bedroom with us in the cot provided. He enjoyed shuffling around on a little truck which we borrowed from the owners on the patio. We were also provided with a highchair and utensils. We even borrowed a baby monitor so that we could sit outside without worrying in the evenings.
The property is very well specified and has been finished to a good standard. The bathroom was very nice with a good quality shower.
Parking is fine with just a little walk to get to the property.
The area is very peacefull, and if you like walking or cycling the area is probably ideal. We did day trips out in our hire car to various beautiful old towns, such as Gubbio, in the area, and one day we ventured as far as lake Maggiore.
We hope to go back and stay there again, hopefully in 2009.
