The Valenciana region
The southern Costa Blanca regon is well known in the UK as one of the most desirable of holiday destinations with its year round sunshine, beautiful sandy beaches and relatively low prices. This particular area of the Costa Blanca also benefits from it's own mini-climate, surrounded as it is by three different inland mountain ranges and flanked on its fourth side by the warm Meditteranean coastline, which seems to ensure that the weather here is almost always amongst the best in Europe. The area has been designated by the U.N as having the healthest climate on the continent.
Apart from the obvious attraction provided by the long sandy beaches the area also contains many towns of great cultural and historical interest within a short 40 minute car ride. The magnificent cathedrals of Murcia and Orihuela are well worth visiting and the nearby town of Elche, which has been awarded two international Heritage awards, is a relatively undiscovered gem.
Also within easy reach is the city of Alicante. Torrevieja, with it's busy port and well-known nightlife, is also only 20 minutes away.
As a contrast, the Vega Baja region, in which Guardamar lies, is a fertile farmland area, offering the two-fold benefits of tasty, locally grown fruit and vegetables to accompany the many locally caught fish dishes that are readily available and a multitude of isolated, truly rustic Spanish bars, that can be explored away from the usual tourist trail, to give a true taste of rural Spain
Guardamar del Segura
Guardamar del Segura is a smallish, quiet town that still retains its Spanish identity. With long sandy beaches the town has an abundance of shops and bars and a locally famous market day on Wednesays that is well worth exploring. The town also benefits from a small picturesque harbour and a pine forest flanking the beachfront, which gives way, once in the town centre, to a cultivated park area, where you can discover many wild ducks, peacocks, turtles swans etc and which contains an excellent play-area for children. There is a very good and cheap sports centre with large outdoor swimming pool available to all and, in the summer months, a night-market, accompanied by fairground attractions, provides a great way of passing an evening whilst selecting one of the many park-side restaurants and bars to enjoy.
Outwith the town itself, the Vega Baja is an area replete with orange, lemon and olive groves and there are a multitude of small towns and villages to explore, either by car or on bike. The area is flat and the roads and tracks quiet enough to make cycling a viable and enjoyable way of exploring.
The region is famous for its natural salt lakes and this, along with the reed banked River Segura itself, makes the area a well- known attraction for twitchers of all ages and nationalities.
Like all towns within Spain there are a multitude of colourful and exciting fiestas to enjoy but, of special interest, are the week- long Semana Santa parades in the week before Easter Sunday, Spain's major holiday week of the year, and the Moors and Christians festival, beloved throughout Valencia, a week long jamboree of parades and events in which each town tries to outdo its neighbour.
For the keen golfer it should be noted that there are a half a dozen well kept and beautifully challenging courses within half an hour of the town with at least another six within an easy hours drive.
