The Marche / Abruzzo / Marche region
Gualdo is a small picturesque village located within close proximity of the magnificent Sibillini Mountains, renowned for spectacular walks, lakes and wildlife. Gualdo has 2 ancient churches and an imposing water tower. There are walking itineraries which follow the water routes around the countryside. The village is kept in immaculate condition and has a lovely children's park where local families gather in summer evenings. The village offers all basic facilities such as a bank, bakery, chemist, petrol station, bar and restaurant and you will find the locals open to visitors, helpful and hospitable. Nearby Loro Piceno is an area famous for local wine production and there are many historical towns to visit such as Macerata,(which offers a spectacular outdoor summer opera festival), Ascoli Piceno (renowned for its porticoes and jousting festival) and the Roman settlement of Urbisaglia. Further afield, excursions can be made to Assisi (home of St. Francis), Perugia, Spoleto, Urbino (for Renaissance art) and the Republic of San Marino. Even Rome and Bologna can be reached within 3 hours if you get tired of lounging by the pool.
Gualdo area
There are many "sagra" throughout the year and especially in the summer months. These are local festivals each celebrating a different food ( perhaps wild boar, truffles, or roast goose) or wine and provide a cheap, enjoyable evening including dancing and games. Gualdo boasts its own 2 week long summer festival when people come from miles around to dance in the park plus its renowned Cheese Festival in May. The nearest town of Sarnano is famous for its therapeutic spa water and has a health and beauty spa. There is also a large market on Thurdays. The cafes in town offer strategic places to "people watch" and serve the most wonderful icecreams imaginable. Le Marche is the centre of the Italian shoe making industry so many designer outlets , including Tod's are located within easy driving distance. In winter the ski slopes above Sarnano are open from Jan-April making this the perfect destination for a " settimana bianca" ( a "white" week as the Italians call it). Skis and snowboards can be hired at the ski centre and lessons arranged at the ski school. The slopes are far less crowded than those in northern Italy and there are days midweek when you can find yourself virtually alone whizzing down the hills in bright sunshine. Perfect for beginners and more advanced skiers alike. There are many facilities for various sports activities such as paragliding, shooting, climbing, rambling and quad biking located in or near the Sibillini National Park. The area is renowned for its dramatic landscape and offers spectacular walking routes, both gentle and challenging. In spring you will be surrounded by rare wild flowers and carpets of purple lentil flowers.
