The picturesque lane running under the house, which now has minimal traffic, was in medieval times an important entrance into the town. Follow it for a short walk to shops, restaurants, historic architecture, museums, old churches, etc. Yet just a short drive out of town brings you to the Park of Monte Cucco, where you can enjoy many mountain sports, including hiking, cross-country skiing, gliding, canyoning in gorges and ravines, and visit subterranean caves, view fascinating fossils, or just spend hours communing with nature. Or visit other beautiful nearby towns, such as Assisi, Gubbio, Spello, Perugia, Spoleto, and many others.
Parking on street near house.
It's not necessary to have a car in Gualdo Tadino, since there is public transportation as well as trains to nearby towns, and all amenities are available in the town, including an internet shop just a 5 minute walk away. However, having a car gives you more freedom to take day trips on your own schedule and drive wherever you want. Safe parking is usually always available on the street outside the house. The only time it is difficult to find parking later in the day is when there is a festival in the town, and then you'll be wanting to stay where you are and join in the fun! Please note that if you do plan to arrive by train that there is only one taxi in Gualdo, who needs to be booked ahead of time, and buses do not run on Sunday. If you plan to arrive by train, please inform the owner upon booking.

The Umbria region

Umbria is one of Italy’s “unspoiled” regions, often referred to as the “Green Heart of Italy.” It truly looks like a post card perfect world. Small villages, romantic medieval castles, and beautiful historic old hilltowns dot the countryside of gentle rolling hills and woodlands. Separating the eastern border of Umbria from nearby Le Marche is the Appenine mountain region, offering wonderful skiing and other winter sports.
While the beautiful countryside does a great deal to draw tourists to Umbria, it is its art and history that captures the imaginations of people from distant lands. Umbria is the host to many wonderful artistic and historical relics. Beautiful examples of medieval and Renaissance art can be found in nearly every small town. Wonderful frescos such as those in the famous St. Francis basilica are well preserved and lovingly adored by the people of the region. Churches, governmental buildings, and theatres from the Roman Empire to the High Renaissance still stand virtually unchanged by time.
Tourists may also enjoy a visit to any number of ceramic, pottery, and artisan studios in the region for a glimpse of old world hand crafting techniques still in use today. Umbria is also home to many museums and cultural centres that cater to the educational interests of visitors.
The Gualdo Tadino area
GUALDO TADINO
According to local legend, when the gate Porta San Donato was originally built into Gualdo Tadino's city wall in 1242, the arch was narrower. In 1292, Pope Nicholas IV decided to visit Gualdo Tadino. He would be entering through the arch at Porta San Donato, but it would be too narrow for his carriage. So the arch was widened to what it is today to accommodate the pope's carriage in 1292.
On the back side of the house you can see a faint square in the middle, to the right of the kitchen window. That is the papal coat of arms.
The gatehouse has survived for so many centuries due to its incredible strength. The walls in many places are over 3 feet of solid rock.
There's lots to enjoy in this old Umbrian hill town at the foot of the Appenine mountains! Destroyed three times, it was built for the last time in 1237, and although most of the old walls have disappeared, a large part of the old town still exists today, including one of the four original gates, our Porta San Donato. Stroll through old streets that have preserved their intimate character and are enhanced by arches between the houses on either side, by cascades of steps and climbing plants and flowers.
Opposite the cathedral, which has preserved its 13th century façade with a rose window, see an intriguing apothecary shop that is more than a century old and features decorative motifs in Art Nouveau style. Stop for a bite to eat or for a glass of wine at a restaurant or bar, browse in the shops - don't miss the distinctive ruby and gold metallic-coloured pottery for which Gualdo is famous, in the craft shops that still adopt muffle kilns, as well as the Modern Pottery Museum. Discover the exquisite and unique handcrafted jewellery of Elisabetta Lupi, in her little shop across from the Emigration Museum, where you can find information about Italians who emigrated from various regions.
Visit the Rocca Flea, the grand museum fortress with the Permanent Pottery Fair and paintings Matteo da Gualdo. Gualdo Tadino is also famous for its delicious mineral water, La Rocchetta, which it bottles, and which flows from the tap at Porta San Donato. Go a short distance uphill from the town to the shady La Rocchetta Park
Gualdo Tadino is not overloaded with tourists, and the friendly locals will enthusiastically welcome you!
EVENTS
The biggest event of the year in Gualdo Tadino is "I Giochi de le porte". They say in Gualdo Tadino, “You’re an ass if you don’t go to the festival of the Four Gates. But if you do go, you see many asses!" This town in Umbria has a three-day event in which asses are the stars. The festival starts on the Friday of the last weekend in September and gets underway with ringing bells, rolling drums and a procession of a thousand locals dressed in 15th-century costumes that are lovingly created during the year. On the first day the asses, which are raised just for this occasion, drag carts around the more than 2,500 foot-long city walls. On the last day jockeys ride the asses bareback in a race. The winner then ignites an effigy of a witch who supposedly betrayed Gualdo Tadino to its enemies in the legendary past. In between, there are flag-throwing, slingshot, bow-and-arrow, crossbow and other contests. During the festival, the town’s population of 15,000 is more than doubled by visitors.
The countdown during the one hundred days preceding the event is signaled by changing numbers on a board put up on the front of the town hall. The contest celebrates the rivalry between the four quarters of the town, named for the original four gates: Porta San Benedetto, Porta San Marino, Porta San Facondino, and our very own PORTA SAN DONATO!
PARCO DEL MONTE CUCCO; BEACHES, OTHER ACTIVITIES
Mt. Cucco (1,566 m, or 5138 ft.) is part of the ridge of the Appenines, between Umbria and Le Marche. Gualdo Tadino and Gubbio are the most important nearby towns to the Mount Cucco Park. In the territory of the Park Municipalities you can visit several small handicraft and manufacturing activities and some welcome structures and restaurants. There are subterranean waters and mineral springs, uncontaminated watercourses, intact big beech tree woods, karst caves where visitors are not admitted in large groups, historical centres, minor but rich in cultural and artistic ruins, and charming hermitages of the Benedictines. And for the sports enthusiasts, there is cross-country skiing, hang gliding, spelunking, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, and much more! See all that this wonderful park has to offer on their website: http://parks.it/parco.monte.cucco. Also check out the following site: Gruppo Speleologico Gualdo Tadino (including great videos!): http://www.gsgt.it/.
The nearest beaches to Gualdo Tadino are on the Adriatic coast, 60 miles to the east, and at Lake Trasimeno, 40 miles to the west. The nearest golf course is the Golf Club Perugia, 36 miles (www.golfclubperugia.it.)
NEARBY TOWNS
Gualdo Tadino is well situated as a base for visiting other areas: Assisi (of St. Francis' fame) is only 20 miles away. Beautiful ancient Gubbio, rich in monuments, lies 16 miles to the northwest. In May check out its "Racing Silk of the Crossbow" and the "Ceri Race Festival". Gubbio also boasts the "biggest Christmas tree in the world", every year on the evening of Dec. 7. The end of October - beginning of November every year brings "The National Exhibition Market", celebrating local truffles, exquisite foods, and local handicrafts (ceramics, wrought steel, embroidery, wood, leather, stucco...) Perugia, 29 miles southeast, the capital of the province, is a notable artistic centre of Italy. Enjoy the art, music, architecture, shopping, University, and famous chocolate all year round! (Check it out at www.perugiaonline.com.) Enchanting Spoleto (famous for its "Festival of the Two Worlds") is only 37 miles south. Spello, one of my personal favourites, is known as the little sister of Assisi, and is only 24 miles from Gualdo Tadino. Many other beautiful towns, Umbertide, Bevagna, Trevi, Montefalco, Foligno, Citta di Castello, Arezzo, Cortona, Todi, Citerna, Anghiari, Deruta, are all within reach for day trips from Gualdo Tadino - a new one each day!
Since Gualdo Tadino has its own railway station, as well as good bus connections, a car is not necessary. However, if you are staying for a longer period of time and want greater freedom to see as much as possible, a car is advised. Parking is available on the street right outside Porta San Donato.

A lovely restored dwelling in a 12th century gate house, extreme comfort for 2 1/2 weeks, great home base for day trips to Assisi, Perugia, Spoleto, Gubbio, etc., kind towns people, internet shop, delicious markets, post office. Apartment has excellent reading, CD's, DVD's, games, great kitchen where we cooked, a lovely welcome basket with a fine wine included, we were two couples that shared every cost, a plus in todays economy. Great bus service for day tripping. Owner is totally accomodating, fair and honest, she made us feel like it was truly our home for 2 1/2 weeks. Lastly, the views that engulf Gualdo Tadino are breathtaking. Hope to return!! |

This apartment contained in a gatehouse was built in 1242. Just that alone gives you a wonderful feeling of the past and the thrill that you are actually in an authentic Italian town which is not yet discovered by loads of tourists. The apartment itself has been lovingly decorated along with warm Italian colours. Every little thing needed for a compfortable holiday away from home has been thought of to make your stay memorable. Restaurants and shops are a stroll away and the town's people are very friendly and always eager to assist if your Italian is not so good. It was a fabulous experience for us. |
Guestbook for Porta San Donato
"We're huddled around the fire in the bar in the piazza, where everyone is trying to keep warm. 'Freddo, freddo!' is the greeting of the day. Despite the freezing temperatures we've been extremely cozy in Porta San Donato, expecially in the evenings watching DVDs while snuggled up under a blanket on the comfortable sofa. Loved being in a small, out-of-the-way town - we finally worked out the one-way system! Thanks for the use of your lovely place - we certainly plan to return some day soon. Wish we could stay longer."
(the following was sent later in an email to owner)
"The grocery store on the corner up the road from your place was a treat, although once we'd discovered the Baccus restaurant all thoughts of cooking went out the window. A fantastic place, great food, and incredibly lively on a Saturday night! Likewise the bar in the main square - a cozy place to hang out during the rain.
It was quite chilly while we were there, but lots of sun showed off the surrounding landscape to advantage.
We particularly enjoyed trips to Gubbio and Spello, and took the train from Assisi to visit Florence for a couple of days. Lots of chances to practice our halting Italian everywhere we went. It was a great experience to live in a small town in such a lovely, comfortable apartment and we thank you for the opportunity to do so. We hope we'll have the chance to go back again some time."

"As I sit here by the warmth of the fireplace I can't help but wonder how many souls and steps have gone up and down these staircases. Thank you for sharing this historic home with us and others who have come before us. Porta San Donato is so cozy and comfortable. For an almost 800 year old structure, to have the modern conveniences just leaves us in awe! We enjoyed our stay here very much and certainly hope to return someday soon. The people in Gualdo have been very kind, helpful, and friendly. To just meld into the lifestyle here has been very relaxing. The town is so quiet and peaceful. We will certainly cherish our time here and will tell our friends about Porta San Donato as a must to visit if they come to Italy."

"Buon Natale! What a wonderful place to be on Christmas. We were hoping for snow but we hear maybe tomorrow. The gatehouse worked out perfect and the kids enjoyed having their own room away from us. The town is exactly what we expected and the people couldn't be nicer. Even though it's been raining we did get a chance to go to Assisi and some of the other smaller towns around. The kids got a kick out of driving the streets here because they are so narrow. To us this is true Italy and we are glad our children were able to experience it. We love the house and the town of Gualdo!! Thank you so much for making it a home away from home. We look forward to coming back one day and we can't wait to share our pictures and our experience
with our friends and family."

"We found the gatehouse unique. A cozy social home...a nice alternative to the hotel rooms we had become used to. Porta San Donato was a great base for all our day trips with all the amenities close by."

"Came by car from Perugia - scenic drive through mountains. Your clear directions made it easy to find Porta San Donato. Maria welcomed us warmly and gave us a tour of the house. Loved all the ceramics and cosy rooms. Very comfortable - well-stocked with linens, toiletries, and staples (seasonings, cutlery, plates).
Heating was a bonus, as it was getting cold. Gualdo Tadino - great position for seeing the beauty of Umbria.
Supermarket/fruit near the gatehouse was the best. Very well stocked.
The welcome basket was a nice touch. We enjoyed the pasta and wine!"

"Coming to Italy has been the most exciting vacation of our lives. We fell in love with Gualdo Tadino
- everywhere you look is a subject for a great picture. Beautiful architecture, friendly people, and the pageantry of the games - what more could we want? The architecture was amazing, considering the time passed.
Every corner we turned brought another discovery. The market was fantastic - the fruits and vegetables, the fresh cheeses, and the prices were very reasonable. The shopkeepers were friendly, especially the wonderful people who put up with our bad Italian and smiled. Paolo the optician was understanding and gracious and went out of his way to help us. We would love to return here again...perhaps after we retire. If not, suffice to say we are very grateful to have had a chance to participate in a centuries old tradition of the games and enjoy the warm hospitality of the people. Thank you, Elaine!"

"The decor of Porta San Donato was very attractive, especially the large round table in the kitchen. The appliances were functioning; the terra cotta tiles were charming. The people of Gualdo are very helpful and generous. Finding the neighborhood store was easy, the staff enjoyable. Gualdo is something like heaven.
We saw some of the preparations for the upcoming festival, i.e. archery, slingshots, donkey races. Silks were unfurled and raised. The piazza was filled with two weddings, some rain was falling, yet the enduring love, goodness, kindness will make many rainbows for all abiding."

"We have enjoyed our stay at Porta San Donato very much. The house is very comfortable and has been an excellent base for our day trips. We love Gualdo Tadino - especially the friendly grocery store at the top of the hill
- it's like an Aladdin's cave! Thank you for the welcome basket, and all the other little touches were much appreciated. Thanks too to Maria and her lovely daughter for being so welcoming. For a family of history fans it was wonderful to stay in a medieval gatehouse. We will certainly recommend your lovely house."

"I have enjoyed watching the streets. One of my favorite evenings was July 25 when the town hung blue streamers across the town square and rolled out a red carpet (really!) for an evening of food and speeches. We never quite figured out what it meant exactly. But I believe it celebrated the beautiful lustrous pottery that is made here. My favorite spot in this gatehouse is the living room window with the view of the mountain. I spent numerous hours perched on the marble sill reading or just staring out the window. I pray I will return some day.
With many thanks!"

"Our stay far surpassed my expectations. I truly cannot imagine a more authentic Italian experience. Gualdo Tadino was a perfect home base for our travels and the daily sounds of the roosters crowing, bells tolling, dogs barking and Italians conversing were all so quaint and comforting. We had the fortune of a nesting pigeon on the hallway window ledge (no chicks yet!) Thank you for sharing your home with us."
- Cheri
"Gualdo Tadino was our sanctuary in traveling Italy. The people, the house, the surroundings, gave us a sense of being at home away from home. Everywhere else, we were tourists. This place is definitely more beautiful than we could have pictured. It was a perfect home from which to explore on day trips. Of Rome, Florence, and the Cinque Terre, Gualdo Tadino was the most authentic experience of Italia."

"Elaine, with Maria you have found the perfect person to guard Porta San Donato. We have truly enjoyed our stay here. The weather couldn't have been better. The countryside is so beautiful this time of year, and we have never seen so many different flowers. We sure enjoyed biking around here and the trip up the Valsorda to the top of the Serrasanta was unique. All the cute little towns are great, and our favorites were of course Perugia and Assisi, but we also liked Gubbio and Spello a lot. We were lucky enough to be here during the fiesta of the four ports with archery and slingshot competitions - a great treat. And then this Sunday with the flower covered streets. However, the highlight was a visit to the caves in Frasassi with the stalactites and the stalagmites - just another world, not to be missed. The apartment couldn't have been better, both in regard to critter comfort and its situation in the great town of Gualdo Tadino.
P.S. If you want to go biking in the Serrasanta, pick a day with no wind in Gualdo. If it's blowing here, it's howling there."

"Truly an amazing experience to live in a place with such a long history, yet so comfortable with all the moderns. Many thanks to Elaine for such beautiful furnishings and comprehensive array of everything from road maps and Italian dictionaries to CDs and DVDs with English options. There are so many interesting places within an hour or two and there is never a lack of things to do. We loved the cute laundry in the dungeon and the spot on the wall that was once a papal coat of arms. The apartment has been ingeniously renovated."

"We have had a wonderful time in Gualdo Tadino at your lovely Porta San Donato. Our children loved staying in their own gatehouse. It was comfortable and inviting. You really have created a unique place here. We loved exploring Gualdo and meeting the locals. They were all so friendly. We loved the lady in the bakery who always treated our children to biscuits, and the bar in the piazza which poured 'cappuccinos' for our children, while we enjoyed our coffees. Maria is a real gem and couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful - even though we spoke limited Italian and she spoke no English. Grazie!"

"We're thrilled with your home. It is much more than we even dreamed of. All provisions are fantastic. We have continued to enjoy the ambiance of your house enormously. It is just such a delight. I just love the colours in the house and especially the amazing sunny light your clever yellows in the cucina throw up. Today is our first dull day in 2 weeks and it still makes the room look sunny. As I find different shelves and nooks and crannies I keep admiring different things. We were drawn to the larger bedroom - the bed there is to die for. Just sumptuously comfortable and the lovely new satiny sheets just beautiful."

"What a charming place to stay. I just loved staying in your beautiful historic gatehouse. The accommodations were superb. You have tended to every detail and have done an excellent job decorating the house in a style that fits the dignity of the structure. I also enjoyed meandering through the cute town of Gualdo Tadino and visiting the other charming hill towns close by."
