The Tuscany region
Grossetto province and the Maremma
The province of Grosseto is located along the Southern Tuscan coast. It consists of 130 km of coast line with beaches, pinewoods and rocky shores are broken by numerous coves that are now tourist harbours: Punta Ala, Castiglione della Pescaia, Marina di Grosseto, Talamone, Porto Santo Stefano, Porto Ercole, Cala Galera and the harbours in the islands of Giglio and Giannutri. This coastal area is also known as the Maremma. It also boasts an interesting artistic and cultural heritage. Many etruscan remains, found inside the tombs which are scattered across the whole territory, are kept in the archeological museums of Grosseto, Massa Marittima, Vetulonia and in the archeological areas of Sovana, Vetulonia and Roselle.
In the province of Grosseto there are three wine routes: the wine roads «Colli di Maremma», «Monteregio di Massa Marittima» and the wine route «Montecucco».
What to do and see around Grosseto
Sorano, Parco Archeologico "La città del Tufo" contains numerous remains from the bronze age and the Etruscan period. The park is located in Sovana, this park has a beautiful, natural landscape. It covers three areas of great natural and scenic interest: Sovana, and its profusion of Etruscan necropolis, Vitozza with its 200 rocky caves shadowed by the ruins of the medieval castle, and Sorano, site of the impregnable Orsini fortress which today hosts a medieval museum. The park is open everyday during the summer (April – October) but only on weekends during the winter.
Etruscan tomb walking at Pitigliano is interesting for both young and old. The Etruscans excavated pathways several meters deep that connected their villages, these passages can still be traversed today and are intriguing as well as good exercise. To do this make sure you wear good walking shoes.
Cernaia is a pretty collection of villas just a few minutes drive from the Mediterranean coast, in the Maremma area of Southern Tuscany. The location is ideal to enjoy the coast and also the Brunnello wine area around Montalcino which is only 1 hour drive away.
The well maintained, sunny gardens around the villas are graced by palm trees on manicured lawns criss-crossed with paths towards the two swimming pools.
At the property there is covered parking for the residents. The villas make a semi circle around the pool area. Each has its own garden which overlooks the grounds and then onto the fields around the property and the rolling hills beyond. On the horizon to the east you can make out the Monte Agentario and on clear days also Isola del Giglio.
The nearest town, Macchiascandona, is 2km away, it has a bar and restaurant. Six kilometres away is Grosseto which is a large town and has all amenities.
In about 6.5km you arrive at the Marina di Grosseto which has wide sandy beaches with typical Italian ’baths’ which are areas of the beach set up with umbrellas and sun beds that you can use for a daily fee. Otherwise you can go to the free part of the beach.
A good beaches are also found around Castiglione della Pescaia, which is a pretty recreational port town. Here there are both beaches with the ’baths’ and also free beaches. When you visit this little town it is worth stopping to buy some fish from the local fishermen who sell their fish along the walkway around the port.
For a rocky beach you have to go slightly further north of Castiglione della Pescaia to Le Rocchette.
In the Maremma area there are several other activities, these include horse riding, kite surfing, wind surfing and scuba diving.
Scuba diving can be organised from Castiglione della Pescaia, Porto Santo Stefano or Porto Ercole. Popular dive sites include the Argentario, Isola Gianutri and Isola del Giglio. For more information on diving centers visit: http://www.diveitaly.com/a_diving/toscana.asp and http://www.diveitaly.com/a_diving/toscanaisole.asp (for diving the islands)
Kite surfing there are many good areas however the most popular is near Talamone. For more information visit http://kitebeach.interfree.it/dovesiamo.htm and http://www.cavallonatura.it/
Wind surfing can be done in various points along the beaches. There is a school along the Giannella.
Horse riding, is very popular in this area with many schools to choose from. For some choices visit http://xoomer.alice.it/laserrata/ or http://www.centroippicopoponaio.it/ or www.cavallonatura.it.
It is also possible to horse ride in the beautiful natural park which runs along the coast, visit their website for more information http://www.parco-maremma.it/Inglese/index1.htm
