History of Greve in Chianti

Since the Middle Ages the story of Greve is related to its main square. Due to its location, which places Greve at the crossroads of routes linking the Valdarno, Val di Greve and the road from Florence through the Chianti hills, soon the square became the main market town of the area.

Piazza Matteotti has the characteristic triangular shape and is largely surrounded by arcades, is beautiful, especially in spring and summer so colorful and full of flowers. It 's wonderful to walk, shopping and then to stop to rest, enjoy a good glass of Chianti, eating al fresco, under these arcades. Also in the square facing the Town Hall and the Church of Santa Croce and there is also a monument dedicated to the great navigator Giovanni da Verrazzano, who was born in a house a few miles from Greve. Very nice also the statue of the 'Black Rooster', a symbol of Chianti, located in Piazza della resistance.
