The Tuscany region

Tuscany is one of the most beautiful Italian region and six of its localities have been inscribed in the UNESCO list of world-heritage sites: the Historical centre of Florence, the Historical center of Siena, the Square of the Cathedral of Pisa, the Historical centre of San Gimignano, the Historical center of Pienza and the Val d' Orcia. You must also visit the other wonderful historical cities like Arezzo, Lucca, Pistoia, Massa Marittima, Cortona, Volterra and Montepulciano and especially the beautiful area of Chianti where is located Poggio alla Croce. Chianti is easiest to explore with a car.

The most likely place to begin the trip is Florence and after they take the most important road to know is the Chiantigiana (SP 222) from Florence to Siena, as it penetrates the heart of the region, Chianti Classico. Without car, the region is accessible with SITA buses from Florence.

The Chianti area is an excellent base from which to explore Tuscany as whole without having to stay in these crowded cities. The countryside is beautiful, and absolute gems that should be visited are the hamlets of Montefioralle Volpaia and Poggio alla Croce and the beautiful towns of Greve, Panzano, Radda and Castellina.

Greve in Chianti

Appartamenti Il Castagno is a family-run holiday houses rentals in the central part of Tuscany near Florence on one of the most beautiful hills of Chianti in the quiet and beautiful village of Poggio alla Croce (a few km from Greve in Chianti) . The apartments are located in an ideal place for a holiday in the quiet of the Tuscan countryside , close to all major tourist and cultural place of interest such as Chianti, rich in charming rural views and gourmet products of excellent quality and the art cities like Florence , Arezzo , Siena, San Gimignano , Volterra, Pisa and Lucca are within a short drive (8 km from the highway A1 - Incisa Reggello , by bus or by train (8 km from the railway station of Figline Valdarno). Poggio alla Croce is the ideal place for those seeking an accomodation close to places of tourist and cultural interest like Florence and Siena but also for lovers of trekking in Chianti because it is a strategic starting point for excursions and walks along trails signed by the Italian Alpine Club (CAI) with between woods and vineyards where you will enjoy breathtaking views of our Tuscany region. In the middle of this natural paradise next to a forest of chestnuts Danilo Becattini the owner, sympathetic cook lover of the countryside and typical gastronomic products Tuscan cuisine such as Chianti Classico wine , the extra virgin olive oil, Vin Santo, has create an holiday homes complex called Il Castagno which consists of four beautiful apartments restructured maintaining the typical Tuscan style for 2 to 6 people with two bedrooms, living room with kitchen, bathroom, terrace with a panoramic view especially at sunset, on vineyards and olive groves of the Chianti and Florence. Becattini family will always be available in helping to meet everything you need: Tuscany cooking classes, organizing Chianti classico wine tours, museum reservations, transfer services , car rental and mountain biking, advice on touristic informations.

You can have also a wonderful Tuscany dinner tasting mixed grilled and roast-meats and especially Florentine T-Bone steak cooked in the wood-burning oven. You must taste also our famous 'fritto' (mixed fried food) made, as our grandmothers used to do, in the old black frying-pan. All our dishes are prepared with extra virgin olive oil, locally produced, as most of the vegetable we use. Last but not least our great Pizza cooked on the natural stone of our antique oven. Restaurant Becattini is an unique culinary experience, which we are sure, will make your stay in Tuscany even more memorable. You can visit also the farm “Tenuta La Novella” (1km to the flat). First you will have a interesting walk among the vineyards learning a lot about the history of the farm, the characteristics of its produce and the methods of cultivation.

Afterwards you will enter the wine cellar and the owner will explain you the processes of the wine making from the grape harvesting to the oak barrels in which the wine is born. Finally you will taste the excellent wines “Chianti Classico” produced there.

"Great apartment, Fantastic Restaurant and Lovely Owners"

The Becatini's apartment was comfortable, clean and very reasonable. My only thought would be that garbage bags and some additional kitchenware should be supplied. My husband, sister and I had a great stay there and ate twice at the restaurant. The food is superb and Danilo was extremely accomodating. Lorenzo (Danilo's son and English speaker) was very helpful with directions and suggestions and was always available. We would definitely stay there again!

Dear Judie,
thanks very much, we really appreciate your comment and that you have had a beautiful journey in our flat Il Pino.
You are very nice and friendly people that we hope to see again.

"Great location with excellent view"

This apartment is situated in a little hilltop friendly village, that makes you one if their own very quickly. The apartment has great view of the valley and Danilo and his family treat you like you are his family. We had a cooking lesson by Danilo the Chef, who owns the local restaurant that has been in his family for generations, learning the authentic Tuscan recipes, and it was one of, if not the Best experience we have had in Italy.
By the time we left Foggio alla Croce, we were in tears as it was like we were leaving family behind. We will definitely return again to visit this place .
Thank you guys for making our visit so special.

Thanks very much, we really appreciate your comment and that you have had a beautiful journey in our flat Il Ciliegio. You are very nice and friendly people that we hope to see soon.

"Wonderful Tuscan Apartment"

Our whole experience of staying at the 'Il Cipresso' apartment was a delight from lunch at the family-run restaurant beneath on the day we arrived to dinner the evening before we departed.

Danilo, the owner, his family and staff welcomed us extremely warmly and their neighbours in the small village of Poggio alla Croce were all very friendly, despite our (sadly) very limited Italian.

The accommodation was just as described – very light and airy with the bedroom doors opening onto the balcony/terrace giving a sense of even more space. The apartment was spotlessly clean, well-furnished and equipped and ideal for self-catering. There is no problem with parking which is most useful for unloading luggage and shopping. We did not try the nearest supermarkets in San Polo in Chianti but the large Coop in Figline Valdarno has everything you could possibly want.

The location is ideal for visiting all that the Chianti region has to offer and for travelling further afield. We used the train from Figline to go to Florence (currently Euro 10.20 adult return) and you could also get directly to Rome if you wanted. The nearby motorway can take you places such as Lucca, Pisa, Bologna or Assisi.

We stayed in June when the sunsets over Florence were truly spectacular. The balcony/terrace is wonderful for sitting out even if, given the hill-top position, sometimes a little windy. However, the 'gazebo' in the shared garden is very sheltered with lemon trees around it.

If you don't want to completely self-cater, the restaurant serves excellent food in a wonderful friendly atmosphere at very reasonable prices. There is a traditional Tuscan menu with local family specialities of which they are justifiably proud.

If we are ever lucky enough to visit Tuscany again, we would certainly try and book this apartment and would heartily recommend it to anyone.

Thanks very much fro your appreciation.
We are very happy to welcome and know kindly and friendly people like you.
We hope that you can return.
