The Tuscany region

The Chianti area in Tuscany is one of the most beautiful in the whole region, as well as the most well-known and appreciated by visitors from across the world.

The borders of the Chianti region are not clearly defined but in general it extends over the provinces of Florence and Siena, covering all of the area between the two cities and extending to the east toward the Valdarno and to the west to the Val d'Elsa. The Chianti wine area extends further beyond the two cities, all around Florence and even toward Arezzo, Pistoia and Montepulciano.

You'll often find references to the "Florentine Chianti" and the "Sienese Chianti" to define the areas closest to one or the other city, but these often refer to a wine's origin within the Chianti region.

Chianti offers a unique landscape, with green, gentle hills covered with wide fields of vineyards and olive groves, small stone villages, characteristic parishes and countryside homes in stone.

The Chianti landscapes are so beautiful and particular that they inspire many photographs which then become postcards and calendars distributed across the globe.

Greve in Chianti

Situated in central Tuscany, the Chianti region is renowned not only for its excellent wine but also for its breath-taking countryside. Rolling green hills and miles of luscious vineyards make Chianti one of the most gorgeous areas of Tuscany. Home to picturesque villages such as Radda or San Donato with distinctive medieval architecture and friendly locals, and only a short drive away from Florence, Chianti is a very romantic destination to explore. Wine lovers will delight in the superb quality that characterises the local produce, whilst couples will discover countless hidden corners to enjoy a quiet moment together.

The area offers a rich historical background that goes back to Roman and Etruscan times. During medieval times, Chianti served as a battlefield for the constant wars between Siena and Florence, which led to the construction of many a castle and fortress, still standing today and proudly overlooking the countryside from their hilltops. These striking buildings can be easily spotted as you revel in an energising walk under the warm Tuscan sun.

Today, Chianti's landscape is the backdrop of the glorious scenery of abundant vineyards, tiny farms, charming churches and Renaissance villas that will make your stay truly memorable.

The weather is distinctive for its mild winters, sunny summers and moderately rainy springs. A light jacket is advisable during spring and summer evenings as, while warm, the temperature will be cooler.

The region has a lot of hidden gems to offer. If a refreshing glass of wine whilst enjoying stunning natural beauty on a sunny day is not enough, how about a pleasant bicycle ride across the countryside followed by a picnic?

Its extensive and colourful vineyards make a wine tour in Chianti second to none. In and around Greve you will find a myriad of local farms and cellars where you can taste and purchase local delicacies and visit the Wine Museum. Castellina is home to the Etruscan tombs of Montecalvario and an impressive medieval castle that presides over the town, while Panzano is famous for its Florentine steak and excellent family-run butcher shops. Here you can wander around the Old Town, which dates to the 12th century, before finding a table at the main square to recharge your batteries with a glass of wine and some home-cured salami. Wherever you go in Chianti, you will be stunned by its sunny piazzas in bustling market towns, quaint farmhouses and elegant palazzi all begging to be explored.

Renting holiday accommodation in Chianti

Why stay in a cramped hotel with other tourists when you can discover the finest areas of Chianti from those who know it best? Renting holiday accommodation in Chianti means that you will have unsurpassed inside knowledge. Only the locals will be able to recommend that little café where you can buy the creamiest Italian coffee in town or the most wonderful hidden wine bar away from the tourist trail.
