The Tuscany region
The whole of the Chianti area is stunningly beautiful in all seasons with “Botticelli” flowers in the Spring , glorious golden Vineyards in the Autumn (both seasons fairly warm) .The summers are hot of course ,but because of the gently rolling hills covered in aromatic Mediterranean forests (oh how you will miss those cypress trees when you go home!) it is refreshing to return to after sightseeing in the cities.
For those of you who love History, the origins of the area and Castellaccio itself go back to ancient Etruscan times. The little gravel lane running through the property is Roman and overlooking the main pool is the ancient 11thC church built in the Romanic style (presently a private home)
Up on the hilltop is a very old chestnut grove, where intrepid explorers can find the ruins of the original Castle “Castel d’Azzo”, destroyed in the 14th Century strife between the Guelfs and Ghibellines.
There are many other medieval Castles and fortified Towns (walls intact) dotted around Chianti as a result of the bitter contentions between Florence and Siena.
Greve in Chianti
The Chianti area is full of things to discover. Meandering along its beautiful panoramic roads (a pleasure in itself) you come across medieval towns: Greve, Radda, Gaiole, Castellina with castles, Etruscan tombs, museums, cellars to go wine-tasting, eating places for local specialities, local arts & crafts, wildlife parks(great for kids)
There is always something going on; exhibitions, folk festivals (called sagre), gastronomic events, antique fairs and colourful local markets. There is one somewhere near on every day of the week!
All the main cities of Tuscany are within easy distance ; Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, Arezzo, Lucca, Pisa, Volterra. with their sights, museums, shops etc. Not to forget also The Mall and Prada fashion outlets at nearby Figline.
