Lovely Warm Mountain Hideaway Beautifully Renovated 18th Century Farm House

Le Repaire, (the hideout in english) is a beautifully renovated 18th century stone farmhouse. It's tucked away in the Chartreuse mountains just 10km outside historic Grenoble. Virtually completely private; no neighboring houses. Totally quiet, you can hear a pin drop. This house is the perfect place for a writers retreat. The house is well situated to hiking in the summer and both down-hilll and cross country skiing in the winter. There are 3 ski stations within 20min drive and when there's sufficient snow, you can cross country ski right from the house. The house has high-speed (roughly 20mbps download speed) internet. It's heated with electric and wood. There is a lovely wood burning stove in the living room. There are 3 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms. Upstairs there are two bedrooms. One bedroom has a queen size futon mattress on a tatami platform. It's quite firm. The other bedroom has 2 single beds (a trundle bed in fact). The upstairs bathroom has a large bath tub suitable for two. Downstairs off the living room, there is a bedroom with a double bed and an en-suite bathroom. The kitchen is modern with a glass top halogen stove top and a microwave oven. Plates, glasses, cutlery, cooking utensils, pots and pans are provided, everything you should need. There is a drip coffee maker as well. On the terrace, there is a table and chairs should you wish to eat outdoors. We always used to love eating out doors whenever we could. The house is suitable for children, however with very young children, we do not have child barriers on the stairs. Pets are acceptable. Please note that for the moment there is no television.

The Rhone/French Alps region

The house is located in The Chartreuse mountains just north of Grenoble. It's part of an area called Quaix-en-Chartreuse. Several of the nearby towns have an x at the end and nobody really seems to know why. I have seen some of the older maps and this area is called simply Quay. Incidentally, Quaix is pronounced like Kay.

The area that the house is in is fantastic for hiking in the warm months and skiing in the winter months. If you are a cross country skier (or ski rando skier), it is possible to ski directly from the house when there's enough snow. There are a couple smallish ski stations quite close to the house say less than half hour drive. Across the valley on the other side of Grenoble you have Chamrousse and Les 7 Laux which are pretty decent stations (I prefer Les 7 Laux myself). Within a couple hours drive you have some of the best skiing in the French Alps. Equally, in the warm months, if you get bored walking the trails around the area the house is in, you have some of the best mountain hiking trails of the Alps within your reach for the day. The one thing we never were was bored!

Don't let the location scare you, it's only about a 15min (10km) drive from the house to the centre of Grenoble!
