The Meridian passing through the principal Transit Instrument at the Observatory at Greenwich was to be the 'initial meridian'. Giving its name to the Greenwich Meridian and Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).
The town became a popular resort in the 17th century with many grand houses, such as Vanbrugh castle established on Maze Hill, next to Greenwich park.
The National Maritime Museum in Greenwich comprises three sites: the Maritime Galleries, the Royal Observatory and the Queen's House. Together these constitute one museum working to illustrate for everyone the importance of the sea, ships, time and the stars and their relationship with people.
