Uniquely situated beside an ancient lighthouse. above the dunes, sandy beaches and unspoilt fishing village of Winterton-on-Sea. this quiet holiday village is ideally placed for exploring the Norfolk Broads and coast but also has the facilities for those families who seek a traditional seaside holiday. The facilities afforded to guests include a well maintained heated swimming pool, complete with a sheltered sun bathing area and alongside is a modern children's playground. Inside the main building there is a fine restaurant, bar and amusement room. The holiday village also has a launderette.
From 'The Retreat' a short walk takes you to the 'Fisherman's Return' public house. situated in the charming conservation area of Winterton-on-Sea village. Similarly, walk directly from Hermanus holiday village, over the dunes onto the soft sands of Winterton beach. There you can walk for miles in any direction but particularly north towards Horsey, where you will almost certainly encounter seals relaxing on the beach or in the sea, before they all come ashore in December and January to have their pups. The number of pups born last year exceeded 600 - a singularly good reason for staying a couple of nights at this time. A walk or a short drive will bring you to the National Trust's 'Horsey Wind Pump'. Looking identical to a windmill, it is open to the public and the N.T. shop and tea room is nearby. Horsey Wind Pump is situated beside one of the most easterly access points onto the tranquil Norfolk Broads. Day boats can be hired at the nearby village of Martham and Hickling. For those requiring a traditional seaside holiday, complete with amusements, try nearby Hemsby, Caister-on-Sea and of course Great Yarmouth. Further afield are the Norfolk Broads boating centres at Potter Heigham, Horning and Wroxham. A few minutes drive from Wroxham is the ancient City of Norwich, which boasts a Norman castle, 32 medieval churches and shops that put Norwich in the U.K.'s top ten list of retail centres.
The above is an introduction to some of the local attractions. More information can be found in your welcome pack at 'The Retreat' or at the Hermanus reception.
