Great Yarmouth

A few minutes walk away in the village of California is a lovely Pub, the "California Tavern", where good food and entertainment is available. ''Moments'' restaurant is a few minutes walk away with traditional English cuisine.

The "Wheelstop Diner" restaurant and the "First and Last" pub are a walk away.

In the village Scratby, a few minutes walk, there is a local mini market and post office, garden and antiques centre, the charming "Moments" restaurant and village bakers, all are open all year round. Also available in the main season are "Abigails Bistro", there is also a hire store for deckchairs and windbreaks on the lovely sandy beach.

On May 11th, 1848 a quantity of sixteenth century gold coins was found at the foot of the cliffs near Scratby by local beachmen. At the same time the California gold rush in America was much in the news. The beachmen decided that their new village needed a name â?? and California, Norfolk came into being. By 1851 houses were being built there. By 1861 when the next population census was taking place the population of this new hamlet had risen to almost two hundred. By 1870 over forty houses had been built, plus the original California Tavern.

"A bit shabby, not as secluded as the website suggests, but near a lovely beach"

The price and website suggested this was a luxury beachside house, It was ok, just a bit shabby and tired. As examples, the towels were advertised as fluffy. They were fine but not especially fluffy. The fridge and freezer doors bashed into each other. In one room the bedside lamp didn't have a socket to plug into so was useless where it was. Each room had something small like that. Nothing big enough to complain about but just not quite the luxury that was advertised. The garden however was fabulous. Quiet, seculded and looked onto the beach.
It was really easy and quick to get to the lovely beach - a real bonus with small children. We could come back to the house for lunch/toilet breaks.
You had to sign up for WiFi and it stopped working quite a few times while we were there. The hot tub also stopped working while we were there, but was fun when it was working.
Overall, I think it was the high expectations that made it not quite so good. If it had been a bit cheaper and the website a bit more realistic, then it would have been great.

Thanks for your review, a little confusing though as you say "not as secluded as website suggests" and then go on to say "fabulous. Quiet, secluded and looked onto the beach."
Not sure about the house being "shabby", perhaps you mean that`s how you left it! Please have a look at the other reviews.
