The Cumbria/Lake District
The Lake District, also commonly known as The Lakes or Lakeland, is a mountainous region in North West England. A popular holiday destination, it is famous not only for its lakes and its mountains (or fells) but also for its associations with the early 19th century poetry and writings of William Wordsworth and the other Lake Poets.
The majority of the area was designated as the Lake District National Park in 1951. It is the largest of the thirteen National Parks in England and Wales, and the second largest in the UK (after the Cairngorms). It lies entirely within the modern county of Cumbria, shared historically by the counties of Cumberland, Westmorland and Lancashire. All the land in England higher than three thousand feet above sea level lies within the National Park, including Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England. It also contains the deepest and longest lakes in England.
Grasmere is a charming village right in the heart of the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, England. Within easy reach are the honeypot towns of Ambleside, Keswick, Hawkshead, Coniston, Bowness and Windermere.
Grasmere lake (see photograph) lies to the south of the village, around which there are some gentle walks for those that prefer the lower ground. For those that prefer a greater challenge, in Grasmere you're centrally situated for taking on the craggy peaks of the Scafell Pikes, Helvellyn, Skiddaw and the Langdale Pikes.
Grasmere was once the home of the famous poet William Wordsworth; today you can visit two of his former homes - Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount. Also in the centre of Grasmere is St. Oswalds Church, the churchyard of which contains the Wordsworth family graves.

"conveniently situated, very pet friendly, can recommend pub next door"
Enjoyed our stay there, despite the weather!
A few negatives, bathroom door with no lock :(
the radiator in the kitchen only stayed on for a couple of minutes and despite reporting it at the start of our stay no-one came to look at it.
No batteries in tv remote and only able to get bbc 1 and cbbc!
It would have been nice to have a few logs/coal left .
other than that a good time had by all

Although not right in a town the cottage was right next to a pub and a short walk to town. Cottage had everything we needed although some basic items like salt/pepper/tea/coffee would have been appreciated.
Fantastic area with loads of easy walking for little legs.
Very much enjoyed our stay and we would love to go back!
