The Basse-Normandie region
St Jean le Thomas is situated on the west coast of the Manche peninsula, in the bay of Mont Saint Michel. The Manche department is one of lush green fields and orchards; long sandy beaches; magnificent sea views; rolling hills and dales and charming towns and villages. The countryside and the slower pace of life have often been likened to a Devon reminiscent of the 1950's. This is real cider-making and horse riding country. There are many outstanding places of interest within easy reach : the tapestries at Bayeux, the D-Day landing beaches, the rugged coasts of Brittany, the copper town of Villedieu les Poêles, Cherbourg's hugely popular Cité de la Mer and of course, the jewel in the crown , the Mont St Michel.
St Jean is a charming village with lots of character, small enough to be quaint but large enough to boast all the amenities you would need for a relaxing holiday. There are three restaurants within walking distance , a bar in the centre of the village for sitting watching the world go by and another couple of beach bars. There are many beautiful walks - through the woods that shelter the village from behind, along the cliff tops with stunning views out to sea or simply along the miles of beach that face directly across to Mont St Michel. The Mont can be reached by road or there are guided walks across the sands, either on foot or on horseback.
Whilst one can be self-contained in the village the local towns of Avranches and Granville are only twenty minutes away. Avranches is an interesting hilltop town with many existing medieaval parts and was the scene of one of the Normandy invasion's fiercest battles. Granville is a beautiful seaside town and fishing port from where you can take a ferry for a day trip to Jersey and Guernsey or to the Chausey Islands, the archipelago nature reserve that faces the town across the sea. The town has an interesting local history museum, an impressive art gallery and is home to the birthplace of Christian Dior, whose house is now a fascinating musem of fashion history.
There are many wonderful individual shops and boutiques and , of course, a huge choice of restaurants offering the whole range of fresh seafood one would expect from a town with its own fishing fleet.

"One of the most comfortable and well equipped accommodation we have eve stayed at in France."
We stayed for a week at Les Mouettes which is ideally located to explore the areas of west Normandy and east Brittany. The bungalow was beautiful and very well equipped with enough china, glasses and other kitchen utensils, to cater for a party. The décor was really tasteful and well thought through. There were enough books to keep you going for a year. It is one of the best places we have stayed at in France. David and Alex were more than accommodating. Nothing was too much trouble for them. They even booked an appointment with a local vet for our dog, prior to our leaving. We will most certainly be returning when we visit that area again, which hopefully will be next year. 10 out of 10.

"A cottage Home from Home!"
We spent a week at Les Mouettes (4 adults). The cottage is absolutely wonderful - clean and tidy with every item of equipment you could wish for. A welcome pack consisting of a bottle or red wine; biscuits; snacks; pack of coffee and even a pack of beers and a bottle of champagne in the fridge! Masses of room with comfortable beds and an extensive garden with a BBQ and garden furniture - we could easily spend a day chilling out after our long drive down from the UK. David and Alex were the perfect hosts. Nothing was too much trouble - we immediately felt at home. We will highly recommend Les Mouettes to all our friends. Thank you once again David and Alex - a wonderful break and would certainly return. Stuart, Pam, Denise & Glenn.

"A lovely home from home"
This is not a basic holiday let - it is more a home from home. The house has lots of homely touches, a well-stocked kitchen, hundreds of books and loads of DVDs and CDs. The owners are very helpful and provided us with a wonderful welcome pack on arrival. The property is in a quiet location, with a 10 minute walk into the village centre, and the beach beyond. The house is wonderfully comfortable, with three comfy settees in the lounge area and all the beds are lovely and soft.

"Superb Cottage in peaceful location"
Les Mouettes really is a home from home - the best thing is that the beds are very comfortable. The garden is lovely, a nice table and umbrella close to a brick BBQ make for a nice meal in the garden. The kitchen has everything you could need. We also did not hear any dogs barking in the evenings which on previous holidays has annoyed us. The local village is a ten minute walk downhill. There are 2 restaurants in the village centre...we tried l'Brulot and really liked it. The other three are on the cliff tops and a 40 minute walk away down a old railway track which is a wonderful walk but one which I would not do in the dark...therefore they are a drive away or a very long walk along the roads. The local beaches are lovely...Carolles was our favourite. We had a wonderful relaxing break and hope to return. Best wishes to David and Alex who are great hosts - and a big thank you for the welcome goodies which was very thoughtful. We were also given some fresh cherries and fresh eggs throughout our stay which we really enjoyed. My one tip for anyone going during the summer would be to take insect repellent and fly swats and those nets to put over food as there are alot of small flies due to the local land being full of farm animals. If I hadn't taken my two nets with me I would have struggled when cooking. We took the time to visit Bayeux which was wonderful and I would recomment this to anyone. It was about 1hr 20 min drive...but worth it to see the beautiful cathedral and tapestry. The Mont St Michel is a must see - a really lovely morning - go early to avoid the crowds. Avranches is a nice town and there are good shops for a rainy day. There is sooo much to do - enjoy your holiday
