The Scottish Highlands region
From the lush green farmlands of the Borders to the rugged landscapes of the Highlands, the Scots are proud of their land and identity. The beautiful countryside of Dumfries and Galloway is littered with fortresses and strongholds, testimony to its dramatic history. Moving north, the Highlands are to Scotland what the Pyrenees are to France, with equally breathtaking scenery and fantastic opportunities for walking and mountaineering. Aviemore and the Cairngorms National Park are particularly famous for skiing, whilst Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain at 1343m, is a firm favourite for those seeking a challenge. For the less energetic, the Whisky Trail provides a unique way of exploring many of Scotland’s attractions and for quieter moments, there’s always Loch Ness and a chance to spot the elusive monster! Scotland also has some of Britain’s best and cleanest beaches. Cromarty is famous for its bottle-nosed dolphins and Nairn, whilst claiming to be one of the sunniest and driest places in the country, has glorious stretches of clean sand over which to roam. Several islands lie off the Scottish coast, each with their own character and heritage, however the Isle of Skye is probably the best known and most visited. As the largest of the Inner Hebrides, Skye’s turbulent geological past has bequeathed it a stunning coastline. Experienced walkers are drawn to the Black Cuillin Mountains, whilst those less experienced have an array of lower level coastal walks from which to choose or alternatively, visitors can take some time to visit Skye’s capital, the charming harbour town of Portree.
The Grantown-on-Spey area
Situated in the heart of Scotland’s ruggedly beautiful highlands, Grantown-on-Spey has much to offer. The town itself has a wide range of bars, restaurants and shops and the local area provides great facilities for golfers, fishermen, walkers and bird watchers. For those interested in the area’s heritage, the Castle Trail and Whisky Trail are close by, as is the Cairngorms National Park, offering a great place for picnics and nature-watching. For a winter break, this is a great location. With both the Cairngorms and Lecht Ski Centre on the doorstep, there are great opportunities for experienced skiers and snowboarders, as well as people looking to try out the sport for the first time. Despite the wide range of activities on offer, the area is still surprisingly peaceful and offers a great hide away for anybody looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.

A comfortable cottage with more facilities than we required. The use of the shed as a bicycle store was much appreciated. Convenient parking. Local facilities comfortably within walking distance.... more |

Guestbook for 1771 - Craigview Cottage
The cottage is very well placed for access to the town and to woodland walks and many places of interest.

,The easy access to so many attractions and, being in the town, the ease of shopping for food. The information packs in the cottage are very helpful for planning days out and these is so much available within close proximity to Grantown. The cottage is in a perfect location if, like me, you go for the fishing and the walking.

,I love everything about Scotland and hope to come up and live there soon. Grantown is very well placed for touring the highlands. The people are very friendly. There are plenty of attractions if that is what you want. The scenery is stunning and the wildlife prolific. This cottage was in evey way perfect for me.
