The Cumbria/Lake District

The Lake District conjures up images of magnificent mountains and shimmering lakes and that is exactly what visitors find here. In fact the whole county of Cumbria is home to some of Britain's most beautiful scenery. This region has been a favourite all year round holiday destination for years and apart from its natural beauty it's also packed with lots of attractions and activities that cater for every kind of holidaymaker, from family holidays to romantic breaks for couples and from those who are looking for lots of activities and sports to those that prefer more gentle country pursuits. The Lake District National Park lies at the heart of Cumbria and contains well known and much loved holiday destinations such as Windermere, Bowness, Ambleside, Coniston and Grasmere, here there are lots of charming Lakeland villages to discover and visitor attractions for all the family. The northern and western lakes have miles of untouched natural rugged beauty and rural villages as well as being home to the historic northern lakes town of Keswick with its many shops, pubs and restaurants; providing a great holiday base. Other areas to discover include the Eden Valley, Cartmel peninsula, south east Cumbria and the Carlisle and Hadrian's Wall area; all equally beautiful and very handy for day trips into the lakes.

Broughton Lodge Cottage is perfectly located for exploring the Lake District at large. Numerous historical sites dot the landscape and you can visit a number of sites in various states of repair from Pendragon Castle, the reputed home of King Arthur's father, to fully inhabited homes such as Muncaster Castle. For those looking for more energetic activities, Cumbria offers a number of activity centres offering supervised instruction in gliding, abseiling, rock-climbing, orienteering, caving, tree-climbing and canoeing. Additionally, walking, hiking and cycling paths are available throughout the area and any of the visitors centres can provide you with maps and guidance on where to go depending on what you are looking for.
